What is that part for?

Can someone please tell me the function of
that small wire part thats about a paper clip in thickness, and is found in the hole where the takedown lever goes?
Thanks Bob

That's the take down lever spring. If its not there the lack of tension causes the take down lever to drop down when firing.

And then the side plate flies off. If you are lucky it falls behind the firing line. If you are -really- lucky you can retrieve it before anybody else notices!

I had this incident happen to me a few times and it is quite uncomfortable...especially when other shooters come to you to joke about that old German gun

Last time it happened, I was able to get them off my back by showing them a 1 3/4 group at 50yds that this 100+ years old gun did
