DWM Police??
 

Hello,

A few questions on a Police P-08 :confused: made by DWM.

Chamber marked 1918, no rework date.
No proofmarks on the right receiver side.
SEAR SAFETY, Left grip panel cut for mag safety :confused:
Pistol in it's original condition...

I am confused on the absence of proofmarks on the receiver right side. Pistol is in the m block. It is not a rework and has no unit markings. I beleive it is a Police pistol because of the sear safety. Am I right??

I would appreciate help on ID this P-08 as I'm no expert on IMPERIAL DWM's...( sorry for the PICS, I'm learning to use my new NIKON...)

The sear safety would note police rework, but the only recievers of that period that where not proof marked were Naval I believe. I think it is on page 90 of J. Still's Wiemar Lugers, that he shows a 4" 1920/1917 rework that has a blank reciever side. Interesting.

Policeluger, thanks for the info. I am quite puzzled :confused: as there is no other date that the 1918 chamber date. No reworks marks. The pistol is all matching parts & finish except the safety lever that is a blued one. Could that indicate a III Reich rework? There would still be some rework proofs!

The unmarked receiver is a mystery to me! I do have a 1918 dated DWM ( rework ) that sports only 2 proofmarks on the receiver. That is correct for a late WWI pistol. But this one ? :confused:

I'll post some PICS of the underside of the barrel/receiver & inside of the frame ( right behind the locking bolt ).

Anybody can shed some light on this mystery??

I pulled out my two Weimar era guns, one one is not marked on the right, a 1928 manufacture, the other a 1914 has the original markings on it. Both are police guns.

My Frankenluger police gun has no proof marks at all, and it doesn't have a chamber date. It has a DWM toggle and a sear safety. Dwight tried to figure it out about 6 months ago, but couldn't seem to come to any conclusions. Of course my gun has a lot of mismatched parts (including cannon and frame) so there are any number of possibilities. Nevertheless, it has a great trigger, the bore is like new, it has a pretty nice finish, it shoots 1.5" groups and the sights are almost perfectly zeroed.

Kidvett, One possibility comes to mind re your 1918 PO8 without acceptance or test fire proofs. Perhaps your 1918 receiver was a left over part from WW1, assembled post WW1 for the police, who didn't require military or commerical proofing at the time. Then again, it may have been factory refinshed in the 1930s when the sear safety was added. Hard to tell for sure. Tom H.
