George Peppard's Luger Movies

Matt, havent found a copy of "Operation Crossbow" to rent yet. Still Looking!

"TOBRUK" with George Peppard has him using a silenced Luger in a running gun battle on an Italian ship to free Rock Hudson. In "Night of the Fox" he using a silenced Luger to attempt an assasination of Erwin Rommel. Night of the Fox was a little campy, but I found Tobruk more enjoyable though "Raid on Rommel" used much of the same footage in the film. P38s seems to be the order of the day in ROR. Ted

Milt,

Yes, it is worth renting. It is about the German V1 "buzz bomb" and V2 rocket program. Ted, if you can't find it to rent, Amazon has it on VHS. If you are a war movie fan, "Operation Crossbow" is one you would want in your library. "Tobruk" is good too. I don't own that one but it's on my list. "Guns of Navarone" and "Bridge at Remagen" both on DVD, are on the way.

I have Bridge at Remagen on DVD and it is probably my second favorite behind Where Eagles Dare. Color is excellent and the sound of the tanks and artillery firing is awesome! Nice widescreen! Robert Vaughn using a P.38 in it and there is a scene later in the movie when he is on the bridge and a quick glimpse seems to show a P08 Hardshell, but I think later it is a P.38 holster. No matter I know both weapons will fit in either holster.

The P,38 has a longer barrel, but the Luger has a longer Action so overall they are just about the same size! ted

Bridge too Far DVD question

I was thinking about getting "A Bridge Too Far" on DVD, but a couple of reviews on Amazon state it is not as good a quality as the VHS. I think one review even said the German scenes are not subtitled (Meine Deutsch ist nicht gut). Has anyone watched this DVD?

Re: Bridge too Far DVD question

I also have this DVD and thought the opening sequence of the Germans talking about battle plans was excellent, My opinion is that it is very good! The Scences on my video ARE subtitled! Ted

Ted,

Saw "Crossbow" last night, not many Lugers in that one...because of the late date........but it WAS good. Good acting. Enjoy!

Glad you liked it Milt! It seems to be one of the lesser-known war movies. I had not even heard of it until I saw part of it on TV a few years ago. I hadn't even seen the whole movie until I ordered it from Amazon recently.

George Peppard war movie fans might want to see "The Blue Max". It's about WW1 German aviators. I don't recall if you actually see a Luger; but the pilots are all wearing Luger holsters.

Re: George Peppard's Luger Movies

Watched "TOBRUK" last night, lots of Lugers in that one. George wore a nice brown hardshell holster, but I sure was looking for an AFRIKA KORPS Sand color model like Bob Tracys. An enjoyable move though many of the scenes are copied in Raid on Rommel. Matt, Operation Crossbow is now on 4-6 week backorder from AMAZON.COM, but "The Heros of Telemark" is on it's way!

Ted,

Sorry to see "Operation Crossbow" is on backorder. I hope you get it soon. "Tobruk" is another movie I want, but I wonder if they are going to release it on DVD. I haven't watched "Bridge at Remagen" yet but plan to this weekend. Watched a couple of scenes from the "Guns of Navarone" DVD. Picture and sound quality were much better than the VHS I rented recently. I predict VHS movies will eventually go the way of 8-track tapes.
