1920 non commercial whazzit?

I have acquired a shooter. It is a DWM with military acceptance marks. The chamber date is 1920 but it appears as if the original date was ground off and the 1920 (neatly) applied about in the posiiton of the 1920 on a double date, that is closer to the extractor cutout than a standard date. The barrel is a 9 mm military length but I am not totally convinced it is original. (No SN or diameter markings.) No markings on the grip straps. No made in germany or commercial proof.

It has been nickle plated so some of the shallower markings cold have been polished off or filled in.

Any thoughts on what it is aside from an abomination? (At least I finally have something to shoot rabbits with without worrying about getting it wet or scratched. It's in pretty good mechanical shape with a good bore.)

Well, 1920 was all the wild Lugers made up of WW1 vintage guns right?

The barrel being 9 MM seems a bit odd unless it was an export or rebarrel later. Which is my feeling.

But, overall it sounds like a nice shooter <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Hi Unspellable,

Itâ??s hard to say much without actually seeing the pistol in question, but if the current barrel is not proofed it is likely that barrel was installed here in the US.

Warm regards,

Kyrie

The 1920 date first made me think police Luger but there are no grip strap markings. Could be it's just one of those "cottage industry" post WWI Lugers? Do some of them have chamber dates from the 1920's? Years ago I had a Luger that I'd swear had a 1923 chamber date and otherwise looked like a 1920's parts Luger, all matching except the breech block.

But my memory may be starting to go.
