serial number suffix question
Did production start each year with luger number 0000 suffix 'a'?
I was just reading another post indicating only 38500 S/42 lugers were made in 1939. This would suggest a serial number less than 8500d ??? thanks Jim |
Jim, generally numbers always started at 00, then through 9999 (or 10,000 there is some contention about this) and then it would be 1a etc.
However, years did not start with 1 or 1a, but were usually a continuation of the series, so 1936 might be 3215b etc. I can actually look this up and see the years and serial numbers. Ed |

I appreciate your help. Could you say when 6033p and 7276i were produced? Their chambers are dated 1939 and 1936 respectivly. thanks Jim |
Hi Jim,
Ser no 6033P would be March 1939 and Serial no. 7276I in May 1936...from production charts compiled by Jan C. Still and updates by Frank... By the way, S/42 39 are quite rare around here... kidvett  |
Thanks Kidvett, now I don't have to look it up :)

Thanks, I appreciate your help. The 1939 S/42 may be rare but it only has about 10% of the bluing left. It seems to be in good mechanical shape with matching numbers and an excellent bore however. I'd like to get it refinished.

Contact "Thor" about refinishing... you won't be disappointed.
