Luger chambers

This is a question I asked sometime back, and didn't really get an answer to. So, to be persistant, I'll try again. My DWM 1920 gun has a slight step or bottleneck in the chamber, The 42 Mauser gun I bought last summer has no step in the chamber and looks like any other 9mm chamber. Cutaway pictures of Lugers I've seen had the stepped chambers. So can anyone tell me the purpose of the step? Is the Mauser chamber supposed to be stepped? Both guns are 9mm.

Thanx, Stevie.

This is pure speculation, but is it possible that it was a .30 Luger barrel rebored to 9mm for WWII use? Or was it a manufacturing step allowing for a .30 or 9mm bore like the barrel notch on the Erfurts allowing for the artillery sights?
