Why would a VOPO bring those bids? Refinished, rematched? I don't understand.

It's a nice VoPo, but you can pick them up for about $1000.

The finish is the DDR rework finish, so that's ok.
It served 4 distinct eras, Imperial, Weimar, Nazi, East-German.

I am pleased that people start to see these for what they are, a collectable variation and not a 'shooter grade parts gun'.

It makes no sense. Over 50 bids on a refinished VOPO.
And mismatched. Sear is a different number.
The comedy is in the sellers description, not so much the gun. It loos like a nice VOPO, but it ain't rare and worth the BIN price.

If you believe the listings on GB, eBay, et al- EVERYTHING is "rare". There's a guy on eBay selling old computer boards, some of them actually are rare, most of them are not. But he labels everything as *RARE* in the title, then puts "Rare Find" in the description. Never mind the idiots selling common as dirt Japanese sewing machines for several hundred dollars. These "oh-so-RARE" machines are generally worth $25 - in good condition!

Sign of the times. Communist guns are gaining popularity :evilgrin:

"Markings - see pictures. I have taken a picture of everything I can see.
I know the markings are uber important on these, so I will describe them the best I can. See the pictures and I am NOT a expert on Lugers, just a collector that picked up a few.
-On the right side is a three codes with crowns on top. According to the phoenix investment info - it means this luger served at least three Reichs', the First Imperial, the 2nd Reich (The Weimar Republic) and captured in the 3rd Reich of the Nazi's.
-In addition a 'man' shaped character that according to the Luger book is a - Imperial Army Proof. page 13. This is also stamped on the front of the left side of the toggle. (no name given, I know it is not a man, and am sure there is another name...)
-Both magazines are marked 6834, with a 1 and 2. Though the metal is different. See pics.
-On the back is a 34 and a stock lug.
-On the left side - two markings I can't make out (nor can I find in the book)? and then serial number 6834. Would love to know what they mean. (We may have an answer, an astute emailer said the markings were East German and the pistol was reworked then. Though he sited no references in his email, this seems very plausible. And a google of markings shows what appears to be similar ones.)
-The other parts on the left are marked 34. However on the toggle the number 64? is hand x-ed out and 34 hand engraved in. No idea when this one done.
Three possibilities -
1. When it was made - doubtful. I am mostly German so quality is big deal there, I don't think it would have left the factory with that. It could be a bad strike and may be an 84? But I doubt it.
2. When it was reworked in 1920 - most probable, as the old part may have been damaged or misplaced?
3. By an owner down the road - I doubt anyone would take the time to do that. And why would one take the trouble??? My guess and it is only as guess is in the rework in 1920. It makes a nice mystery and cool part of the history of the gun.
-Also on the right side and it very faint is E. U(?). C. S. A. ???? Very hard to read, so not sure of the lettering.
-Crown N on the bottom of the barrel. (The astute emailer said the markings are Eas German....)


Okay the grumpy ole man is going to come out. Last time I had a luger listed, I heard from numerous "experts" and I use the term loosely.
-One said it was this "model" gun - No serial numbers are all wrong - wrong luger.... They did not have serial numbers in that range.
-Second said is was a different model of course - Sadly his guess was only made in 7.65mm, mine was 9mm - so wrong.
-Third said it was of course a third model - His had no stock lug, mine had one. So wrong again.
I do appreciate help identifying this, but PLEASE site the page number and book for the info. I will pass on to the winner/bidder all REPUTABLE INFO. But it needs to be from a published book.

How did I come up with the price - there is one other double date code listed on GB with a $3000 but it now price. I think mine is nicer shape....but you judge. Most of the one's at firearms auctions have gone for in the $2500-$4000 range. I threw this out to get input, and info. I may auction it later.

Has this been refinished - I will bet I will still get this question. I have owned it for 10 years of it's 100+ year history. I don't think it has. It has the honest wear (very, very, very minor surface wear you expect to see on a 100 year old firearm). IF it looked factory new, I would run. The original engraving is too crisp and nice.

Barnum was right! The seller seems cheap, too... One might expect to have fully-insured overnight shipping thrown in for such a price. But it's your big chance to score a low-quality aftermarket with flimsy material, spot welded construction, and ill-fitting roll pins. Clicking on "4 sold" in the listing shows they've sold two others, but for around $65 each--which is still at least 10 times what this contraption is worth.
