What does "strawing" mean and look like? Thanks.............Bruce "(o)(o)"

Bruce, in a nut shell strawing is a heat treat process which turns in the white metal pale yellow to a golden brown color. This process was used from the first production guns until mid 1937 on the trigger, locking bolt, safety lever and bar and the extractor on 1900 models.

The safety lever is "strawed", it is golden color. Most original strawing is faded or worn out on these 80 year old guns. Especially on parts that were touched a lot, like the right side of the trigger and bottom of safety lever. Also the picture shows a blue or "fire blue" flat sear spring, a nice combintation. http://members.rennlist.com/lugerman/blue&gold.jpg

To watch the process, if you have an electric stove, take a piece of polished steel, lay it on a burner, and turn the burner on High. You can watch the steel turn color as temperature increases.

I watch that same thing happen everytime I cook dinner... Typically - I go through about 4-5 cooking pans a week.... My goal is to be banned from cooking dinner altogether... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
