New to Luger Questions!
 

I cannot for the life of me figure the story behind this Luger. There is a DWM marking on top of the firearm, and most of the numbers match. The barrel is marked '1916', but appears to have Erfurt markings. Can someone try to decipher this please?
Under the barrel has the serial number '1168', with a '42' and '8,82' for the bore diameter.

The barrel was probably replaced.

Spare armorer's parts produced by Mauser had the "42" number in small 2mm to 4mm digits.

The HZa mark is from a rework depot during the later Nazi era.

The receiver was made by Erfurt in 1916 and the pistol was later repaired by an army repair facility at Ingolstadt during the Nazi era as evidenced by the Eagle over HZaJT3.

The "42" on the barrel means it's a Mauser replacement barrel. The DWM on the toggle train shows that it's a replacement for the original Erfurt toggle train although without picture evidence, the toggle train could be made up of parts from other than just DWM.

If the barrel was replaced (which I do believe is true) why does it say 1916 on it?

The 1916 is on the receiver. The replacement barrel screws into the receiver.

Wow! I never knew Lugers could have their barrels removed. I thought the slide assembly was all one solid piece (for lack of a better term)
