S42 Luger today, help...
 

Saw a 1938 dated Luger at a gunshow today. The finish is 98%, slightly thinning on the bbl. All the numbers match with the exception of the sideplate and link pin which match each other. It has two matching magazines that number to the gun (one with a plus under the number) It has a holster that has been cut so that is worthless but also has capture papers and transport papers. The bore was pristine. It was negotiated down to 1250.00 from 1559. With the condition and the matching mags BUT with the two mismatched pieces is that close to the value? I am not a Luger guy, a US martial arms type, but dearly love the Luger pistols.

That is a tough call. Straight "party" line, it is mismatched, thus a shooter...

Sideplate is a common, but bad one to be mismatched (as mismatched parts go) in addition to the link pin.

Be very suspicious about the matching mags. The mismatched parts reduce its value to a collector considerably. The papers, if authentic, add value but only a bit.

If you are considering spending this much money on a collection-quality Luger, you can surely find a better one on which to spend it.

Thanks folks! I will keep the phone on the hook. I do believe the seller had good intentions. If not for the mismatched parts it sure looked good. I'll keep up the lookout to replace the Luger I recently got talken out of. I am looking for an "investment" quality firearm in that particular price range or so. Maybe lurking here and checking the classifieds on this board will turn up one.

Figure out what era and model you want. A WW1 has a difference in history, than a Weimar, and then a Nazi era. Each is a bit different and has a slightly different price and clientel <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
