Question: Simson Lugers, correct type of magazine
 

What is the correct type of magazine for a Simson Luger in the 8xxx range?

I know little (actually nothing) about Simson Lugers and am considering purchasing one. It has an aluminum base on the magazine but is not matching to the pistol.

Considering the rarity of anything genuine from Simson, if it has the period correct magazine with a genuine E/6 inspection mark, I'd probably buy the pistol.

Remember that only 12,000 or so Simson Lugers were made, and perhaps 24,000 magazines would have been produced for those pistols - total.

IIRC, It normally would have a folded tin body, and E/6 marked aluminum base.

However, almost always they were likely issued with two magazines - army have one number, the second has a +

The other for police would have a 1 or 2

Now, generally I believe that one from the factory will have two eagle 6 on the base (top and bottom) and one on the spine.

They started making them and issuing with aluminum bases. At some point, around the 6,000 mark, a hundred or so, perhaps more, likely less) were issued with wood bases.

You will find eagle 46 on the base (one), none on the spine - these likely were replacement magazines and I believe for police.

If you are going to own a Simson, it should have a correct Simson marked mag. They are relatively expensive, but add a lot of value to the pistol. Is the Luger you are considering a police model (sear safety) or army?

so, just tell us the stock number and we can look it up at Simpson's - although I have all their serial numbers in my listing unless fairly new.

My gut is that anything that is 99% blue and strawing that looks so fresh has a good chance of being a restore. It doesn't say that on the website, and Simpson is usually pretty good at stating that. On the other hand, if I had a 99% gun, I'd ask more than what they are asking.

Its a very pretty gun and if redone, it was done very well. That said, I bought a simson in PA that was awfully nice and used to own a mauser that was 98-99% - so its possible.
