is it possible to get a value on my 1940 42?
 

Hello all! I'm thinking of selling my 1940 42 Luger. I'm not sure of it yet... but I need to sell from one hobby to fund another. LOL! I've had this for at least 40 years.... sitting in my safe.
Its an excellent condition Luger. All matching numbers including the matching magazine.
Original blue with very little missing. Id have to guess but I think it might be like 98% finish? Bore is bright and shiny. No pitting or rust at all.
Grips are in very good condition. I'm including several photos but if you need any more photos or info please ask. I tried to get them without glare but they still had some.

It is possible to get an Opinion of value from many sources; most of which will vary from each other- sometimes greatly.

I would suggest you look at the online sights of large luger sellers, like Simpson's and Legacy ; also online auctions that actually sold.

Many of us don't do value estimates, how, where, when you sell all affect the selling price.

Sorry not to be more help, but I'm tired of being told my "value" estimate is wrong ! :)

Regarding Simpsons selling prices, be aware they charge a fee of 20% of the selling price.

Best approach is to review recent auctions for the equivalent item.

Values are changing greatly right now, so look for more current auction results.

Ok... I was just looking for what some of you have seen. I’ve looked at auction sites but I don’t put much stock in those for the most part. People get caught up in the moment of bidding. I have no intention of putting this on auction.

Check out Simpson's and Legacy Collectibles for comps. as Don suggested.....Legacy pricing will be more realistic to what collectors will pay. Subtract 25% from Simpsons.

Pre98.com and Handguns of the World are a couple of other places for comps.

1.8 - 2.5 K depending on the weather, a tad higher is my 2 cents. A fairly common Nazi gun in exceptional condition. Note, I follow Imperials more closely than WWII Lugers, so add that to the mix. Watch the bullets fly now!!!!!!
Pre98 seems exceptionally high on their stock/ consignments. But, if he got it and you need it..... Again, my 2 cents........


You should have front/ rear straps pictured to see condition.

Legacy's web site says they charge a reasonable 15% of the selling price. I agree their selling prices are somewhat less on average than what you see on Simpson's.

However the prices at Simpson's are set by the consignor, unless they ask Simpson to set it for them. I do that.

C numbered guns are consignment, D numbered are his. The prices on D numbered guns you'll see are more down to earth. To get an idea how unreasonable a consignor can be in pricing, look at Simpson's "Reduced Prices" page. Some reductions are drastic, indicating how ridiculously the item was over priced by the consignor. There are three or four guns on Simpson's that I would buy in a minute if they were not so over priced, and Simpson will not go to the consignor with an offer.

I like using Simpson because he gets more money for an item. For example, I had a table at the Ohio Gun Collectors Association for a couple of shows to see if I could sell a few things. I had a P.38 I tried to get $1400.00 for and would have taken $1200.00 if offered, but could get no interest. I gave it along with four other guns to Simpson's and asked him to put a price on them that would sell. The P.38 sold for $1995.00. Give Simpson his 20%, and I got $1600.00. Similar story on two of my other guns that I had tried to sell at the OGCA. All sold when they came out in his "New Items" listing.

My other three guns are selling more slowly as they are considerably higher priced items that I am not that motivated to sell anyway, but if I can get my ridiculously high price I will let them go. They're antiques, not Lugers.
