WW2 German Luger P.08 1939 Nazi Army P08 WWII

Hi all!

Was watching GunBroker and found one very beat up p08 https://www.gunbroker.com/item/873301307

It was sold for $1481
My question is why?? Am I missing something that could value this gun that high?...

Thanks for your opinions!

rhinemann 07-18-2020 01:34 PM

I don't understand why either. It looked like a rust bucket that was poorly re blued and way over the top buffed. 23 bids? Crazy bidders.

couple people got their backs up - its about $500 too much IMHO

More like $1k too much imho...

Trying to buy P08 and see this behavior all over GunBroker. Luger got hyped? )

And I thought that paid too much for my 1906 ))))

I think you might be right. Little Nazi eagle added some value.

It appears to be missing the hold open

It most certainly is.

It sold for three times what I'd pay for it.

To the seller's credit, they didn't try to hide anything. The buyer could see exactly what they're getting and shouldn't complain later.

5 different guys bid past $1000.
There is just no explanation for auction prices- other than perhaps "auction fever" or stupidity.
JMHO. ;)

Due to the Coronavirus there may be a lot of bored people on Gunbroker.

I assist occasionally with my neighborhood gun shop. Sales are absolutely through the roof right now.

But... I have a shooter grade P.38 (nice all original Walther manufacture AC42) on consignment offer there right now, and no inquiries in a couple of weeks... So... go figure?

All it needs is a photo showing Rudel or Galland holding one and it will be gone

Maybe it was Nazi number 2 or 3's private pistol.

This is my guess. I buy and sell higher end camera stuff on Ebay and I have been surprised by the selling prices over the last three months. My guess is people are spending more time shopping on line for all kinds of expensive stuff.

I was re-reading some of the posts on Deaths Head Lugers and the incredible enthusiasm for things SS is beyond my understanding.

Unidentified markings

Obvious this is a 1939 - 42 code P.08 Military Luger
What doesn't add up are the markings. I have the Luger Handbook by Aarron Davis and according to his flow chart I have either a DWM Mauser Military (pretty sure it's not) with the correct proof marks but no DWM Mfg logo on the toggle or a Mauser 42 Code, Four Digit Date with the wrong proof marks. But, there is also a mark on the front of the frame that matches a mark on the magazine that I can't find anywhere else in the book or the internet. Looks like a capital A (italicized). Thoughts?

You've kind of hijacked an on going post on another subject with your question and should probably have started a fresh one to get your answers. What you have is a fairly common, but in very nice condition, 1939 Code 42 Mauser pistol. You might consider using a different reference tool than Aaron Davis. Too many errors and bad assumptions in his work. Jan Still's "Third Reich Lugers" or Don Hallock/Joop van de Kant's "The Mauser Parabellum" would be better choices for research of Mauser Lugers. The markings on your Mauser are correct and have nothing to do with DWM, which was a war time manufacturer in WW1. There is a wealth of information on this Forum that would answer most of your questions, so do a little searching and you will see what I mean.

That is the letter Q on the front of the frame and on the magazine. So the serial number of your Luger is 9456q.
