fails to cock firing pin
 

my s/42 luger often doesnt fire after chambering a new round. I pull the trigger and nothing. I must pull the action back slightly to **** it, then she will fire. This only happens after firing a round, it doesnt pull the pin back, or it lets it back down. Any ideas? Thanks.

When you chamber a round manually does it fire? If so and it doesn't fire the next and subsequent
rounds then the toggle isn't going back far enough. Does the toggle lock down after each shot or do you have to push it down in order to fire?
The first is too weak ammo, too strong mainspring,or both. The second is too weak a mainspring. Try different types of ammo, look for some 124g. Little heavier bullet makes a difference.

<img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" /> If it is chambering a round, and then not firing, but cocking when you retract the toggle slightly, then the disconnect is malfunctioning.

What is happening is that the little button on the front of the sear bar is being pushed into the sear by the trigger lever, and the trigger is not retracting the trigger lever enough to let the button come out into firing position. This button is what the trigger lever pushes on to rotate the sear so that it will release the firing pin.

I suggest that you take the sideplate off and check the functioning of the trigger, trigger lever, and sear bar relationship. Sometimes the pin that holds the trigger lever in will rotate out of it's locked position and keep the trigger lever from rotating far enough to release the sear bar button. If something is keeping the trigger from returning to it's full forward position, the same thing can occur.

I have found that on some guns, when replacing the trigger lever or sear bar, that the small bevel on the side of tip of the trigger lever that presses on the sear bar button will have to be widened slightly or polished smoother so that the sear bar button will slip past it when the toggle closes.

I checked it out and I think that everything is OK. The spring under the botton is new. The clip spring is new. I tried a new mainspring, but it seemed too stiff. The action would often close without grabbing another round. The mainspring I have now is chopped. I will try heavier ammo with both springs and see what I get. Remember, the problem is not that I cannot sear bar to release the firing pin, but that the thing is not cocked after firing a round. I pull har on the action, it clicks, I slap it back down and bang.

The Sear spring might be too weak too and the disconnector would be my guess. Usually this is a function of the trigger lever. Does the Luger have a white streak on the receiver just left of the sideplate. This is usually caused by the trigger lever being held too deep toward the disconnector (and against the reciever) during the firing sequence. When you pull the toggle back slightly does the sear spring click the safety bar into the gun, is so the sear spring is too weak and the gun is closing before the firing pin is caught and held.
