Why do some models have halos and others don't? Below is the 1906 French Contract with! Eric

The ones with halos had dies stamped through the blued finish.

The ones without had the finish completed after they were die stamped.

The halo is actually stress on the surface around where the die stamp deformed the metal. This allows more of the unoxidized steel to show through.

Getting back to Frenchy, It occured to me, How come there no halo on the frame numbers and there is a halo of the lower serial numbers and French proof on the on the barrel? Are they different dies or different metals or other reasons?? Je Ne Sais Pas?

Ron Wood 05-19-2020 05:06 PM

No halo on frame number...numbered before bluing...the frame was inventory controlled from the start whereas the barrel was added in production and numbered after finish. I think you would have eventually figured that out yourself from the previous discussions on halos. :) Also, what French proof? I don't see one.

The shield I thought was by DWM for the French market

Ron Wood 05-19-2020 05:45 PM

Nope, it is found on guns other than French...it is just a DWM barrel inspector's mark.

My mistake page 189, figure 106, Proof Marks "Early and late DWM bottom barrel inspector proof noted on 1906 Commercial and contract models"
