Confusing wreck of a P08
 

This poor specimen is being offered for sale in the EU. It has been deactivated in Austria.

The frame is a 1917 marked Navy frame, but the receiver is weird. Artillery notch and a crown rolled onto the chamber. No sign of a year...

Any thoughts on the receiver crown? Looks old. And I doubt that this cobbled together nutured parts bucket has been boosted.

While searching on the internet recently I ran across an image of a Luger with the same crown marking on the chamber. It was not the one pictured above.
I saved it and was going to ask about it here but it seems to have gotten deleted from my computer.

Did Erfurt ever mark the chamber with their crown???

That large of a crown on a pistol chamber leads me to think it might have been originally used for a rifle chamber mark. It resembles the crown on a Crown/Spandau chamber marking on a Gewehr 88 and 98 rifles.

I am in possession of a luger with the same mark. I never nailed down the origins of it. John

The grips are smooth is that normal as I have a shooter with smooth grips and was wondering?

No, just someone's failed attempt at 'improving' them.

The toggle is a mismatched Mauser S/42 one. This example is a real Frankenluger, but with some interesting bits that sadly have been damaged beyond repair.

It's certainly a mystery as to who or why. Judging by the acceptance stamps on the receiver, it's a 1917 or 1918 DWM receiver.

Not really confusing. Just a wreck "parts gun".

So how do you explain the crown on the chamber?

I think the grips were made by Uncle Pooty in his closet work shop.

Vlim, did you get a frame serial #? Being deactivated in Austria (Is that the EUAT?) may be a clue about the origin of the chamber marking. THANK YOU for sharing this pistol with us. John

Sadly not. To complicate things further the pistol was sold at an auction site, the pictures lifted by a local fraudster and then offered 'for sale' again.

The only positive thing is that without the fraudsters attempt I would have missed it. So in a way that scumbag did us a favor :)

The crown on the chamber appears similar to the M1906 Portugese crown over M2 contract. EUAT is probably an ackronum for EUROPEAN UNION ? ? indicating EU approved demil. TH

Yes, EUAT is the code for European Union / Austria.

This pistol was deactivated according to the 2016 EU Deactivation standard.

The combination of the crown, artillery notch and DWM military acceptance markings is strange, though.

Frame: DWM 1917 Navy
Receiver: DWM artillery
Barrel: post 1918 replacement
Chamber: some royal crown
Toggle: Mauser
Grips: used toilet seat

I'm going towards a guards gun for the Erfurt arsenal toilet building ;)

Even stranger is the amount it brought at auction: 1100 bucks….

If you look at the Early 1st Guard zu fuss Mitre helmets, there is a crown VERY close to these. Der Ritmeister has several posted. I did not want to lift the add picture, but here is a link.
