Crud removal
I have a gun part that has rust and scale on it, and it is threaded. (SVT 40 gas piston). What is a good medium to soak it in to clean it up? Thank you to all replies! Mike

I recently had very good results with SeaFoam's "Deep Creep" Penetrating Lubricant. Did a really good job of cleaning up my 1906 Navy.

Brandon, I always use paint thinner. Handsome Navy! Looks a lot better...

Jerry,
Doesn't it though? I'm very pleased with the old sailor. Also, I need to consult with you on an artillery holster, so watch your inbox. Back on topic, admittedly, paint thinner may be a better option if only for the simple fact that I have only found "Deep Creep" in spay can form. If you need to soak one small part, not so bad, but an entire gun was a bit aggravating. The reason I chose to go that route was the fact that I had read several posts/articles touting Deep Creep as being better than Kroil, which also came highly recommended. Obviously not THE way, but A way. -Brandon |
OP, you should get a variety of recommended products as there are many out there. Most will probably work for you depending on the extent of the corrosion damage done. One of my favorites is Kroil. Keep us posted on what you use and the outcome.
