I may have posted this a long time ago, but my mind wanders.
I saw it on the net today and grabbed it. At any rate it appears that a P08 is dangling by a lanyard. |
Looks like he has some other gear(binoculars) dangling also.
Got to wonder why he needs a rifle and a luger to hand. Thanks for posting the picture. |

May be he is an NCO. I can't make out his rank. Can you or someone else here do it? Sieger |
Collar tress indicating NCO.
Also got a map case. Binoculars as well. Even got a gernade stuffed in a boot. Think he might be "Holly Wooding" as we used to call it. |
Mike, I always said that if I went to war, I'd have a pistol and rifle - of course when I went to Iraq in 2010 - I was the only police trainer contractor who was NOT issued a weapon. We did numerous missions adjacent to the Iranian border. I always made sure the soldiers I was with, KNEW that I used to be an enlisted MP and they always told me if things got hot, to stick my hand out and I'd have a M9 or M4 handed to me :)

For your information, that photo, and another taken just prior to it appear in Jan Still's "Third Reich Lugers" page 42. They were taken on May 23rd, 1940 in the little village of Thulin in Belgium. The wounded French soldier shown in the photo was saved by the German Red Cross.

Think he might be "Holly Wooding" as we used to call it. Mike, He looks positively naked compared to an Airborne Infantry grunt in the Central Highlands!

I carried a pistol and rifle for a while plus a lot of other stuff. We traveled relatively light, but all that weight adds up. Sometimes I had a modified S&W M60, but not always. The .45 and ammo was just needless and bulky. Moving through heavy brush was a chore. From about noon til 2, everybody took a break "POK Time." Similar to a Siesta. We only had 2 Americans and 10-50 CIDG troops on our operations. We'd spend just a week out of camp and then rotate back Team members took turns. I spent 16 months in the same A Camp. A-341. Cambodia on 2 sides a couple kliks.
