They Shall Not Grow Old - WWI color movie
 

Has anyone heard of, or perhaps seen this movie "They Shall Not Grow Old"? It was restored, colorized, and sound added by the director of the Lord Of The Rings movies, Peter Jackson. The review I read said they did such a good job that it looks like it was just filmed recently. The film is only being shown in a limited release - I know it is at some Regal Cinemas. Look fascinating.

I have missed 3 opportunities to see it but am going at 12:15 today. Friends have already seen it and rave about it primarily because you are seeing actual soldiers, not actors, and the gravity of their fate weighs heavily on the viewer.
The editing/colorizing process is said to be a must-see.

I saw it Back in December and Highly reccomend seeing it.

An amazing application of technology (I saw the 3-D version) -- tastefully executed.

Careful, We went with another couple and she was visibly shaken. I thought she might need assistance to leave the theater. You might want to consider leaving women and children out of it? Although Ellie wants to see it again.

Wow, I never heard of this movie. Watched the youtube trailer you posted. What amazing footage. Thanks for sharing this info. I will try to find it but as I live in the boonies it might be difficult.

The colorizing work is mind blowing.
Check the camouflaged M16 steel helmets!
in addition I think that adding voices to them is the cherry on the cake. It gives that feeling that you are there.
Never get tired of seeing all the youtube trailers. Down here no sign of be in the theaters.

I saw it 2 weeks ago, absolutely excellent film.

Terry and i went a few weeks ago - we had watched the trailer on it.

Really something to see and the 30 min afterwards was great. I would love to see the tens of hours that were not included - sea battles, tank, etc.

I missed my chance and regret it. :crying: Perhaps it will pop up on Netflix in the future. I just hope.

I think there will be more opportunities. Try googling it for showtimes.

I'm sure it will be available for streaming eventually. I'd like to see it in 3D, though.

The wife and I saw it at our local Regal a couple of weeks ago. We were blown away! The effort to transform hundreds of hours of 100+ year old black and white film into a high quality color motion picture had to have been huge! It is an amazing achievement.

A lot of the theater goers missed the best part because they left when the credits started to roll. The trailer was a fairly long and very detailed film in its own right that explained how the feature was made, step by step.

It continues to be shown locally, you just have to go on line to check when and where.

Sir Peter Jackson (he was knighted a few years back) is a great enthusiast and collector of all things to do with the Great War. Internationally of course he is known for the Lord of the Rings movies, but at home here in NZ the work of his studios in Wellington are always in the news.
"They shall not grow old" is a collaboration between his digital special effects company and the film archive of the Imperial War Museum in London. I understand that they made great efforts to authenticate the video and audio restoration of the film.
Sir Peter staged a major display of artifacts and film from the 1st World War at our NZ national museum from 2014 till 2018 to mark the centenary and all the items were from his own collection.
He also has a vintage aviation company, here in NZ, which specialises in the restoration of World War 1 aircraft and the construction of exact replicas. The replicas include a Sopwith Camel and a Fokker tri-plane and they regularly appear at airshows.

Peter Jackson has sure come a long way, a truly self made man in the movie industry. I have been a fan ever since I saw "Bad Taste" about 30 years ago, so I can't wait to see the WWI movie. A "Bad Taste II" would probably be a hit as well, now when he has the resources to go all out. :cheers:
