On Proxie auction this morning Lugers were going for very little money: AE's for less then $1000.00 and Artillery's for less then $1500.00…...

Isn't it strange to see those prices for a decent Luger? I wonder where's the catch.

Since it only increases the competition; I don't post links or give hints to auctions that I'm interested in. :)

Hugh left out that some common 4" lugers have sold at $700 or less, of course it costs you 18 to 23% for the bidders premium, plus shipping of $50 or sometimes more.
So the bargain is not as "great" as the hammer price sounds.

It is easy enough for anyone to find the lugers for sale online; proxibid makes it very easy to follow multiple auction companies and bid on the ones you are interested in and track where you are on each of them! ;)

There have been some real bargains lately, maybe folks are saving up their money for Christmas already?

What we are seeing are not "prices" per se. Rather we are seeing minimum starting bids established before the auction begins, or the current maximum bid while the auction is active.

My expectations, (FWIW) are these Lugers will actually sell (gavel price) at much higher dollar figures than we are seeing at present. And then the actual, final, all told, price-to-be-paid will include auction fees (buyer premium, packaging fees, shipping/insurance fees, FFL fees, etc.)

Generally speaking, a firearm with a gavel price of, say, $2,000, may actually have a final cost, delivered, in the range of $2,500 - $3000.

I spent thirty years making low-ball bids on these kinds of auctions and had a success rate in the low single digits :-)

I guess auctions are like the lottery, you can't win if you don't play...

The reason I posted this auction was because of the items that had already been auctioned and the low cost. Yes the additional cost had not been added on yet but still very low prices. You will have to look at the final prices after the auction is over to realize good or bad prices....

I got out bid on the "true" double date. 1917/18. I wonder how rare they really are? There is an old thread here or on the other forum that mentions only a few have been reported.

This is true. The Morphy auction closed a day or two ago. Here are realized prices for some I was watching:

1900 AE - $1200

DWM Navy (2nd issue, I think) parts gun - $900

1900 AE Buffed, refinished - $600

1900 Commercial mismatched + broken FP and Front toggle link - $600

70s Mauser P.08 configuration, ANIB complete original box and contents - $1200

I gave my brother in Texas the heads up for the Mauser because he likes pretty guns. I told him I'd bid $1300 for it if I had the dough. I don't know if he bid, but suspect not, because I haven't heard from him, crowing about it.

Yes, the Morphy auction was/is 4 days, with today to finish up.
Another starts next week, along with a multiple day Rock Island auction.

I guess no one cared about or watched the 1914 dated DWM LP 08.
It went for an incredible price, we'll see if it is a good one in a couple weeks.:evilgrin:

It's a real crap shoot because they don't have good photos or closeups.
The descriptions are sketchy, too.
But, I found some Luger books and some other stuff that was interesting and started out at a low price.

They also allow bidders to post a maximum bid, which automatically ratchets up.
It's similar to how eBay works.

The 18% surcharge is steep and who knows what else they will add on for fees and taxes.

I have bought several items using proxi bid, it depends on the auction house, some are 18% and several are 21% or even 23% - gets very expensive quick. Also, shipping is usually more than If i shipped an item, i assume they add on handling charge also.
