Re issue

Once at a gun show about 20 years ago I saw an artillery luger for sale that was ( supposedly) brought back from N. Africa in WW 2. I've also seen a manifest of bring back items from a WW 2 GI mentioning a "long barreled Luger". Were some artillery lugers re-issued to the German Army in WW 2? (I would guess it would be a small number) Looking forward to replies, Mike

Mp?

The only instance I know of when an Artillery Luger was actually used by a German soldier in WW2 was in the movie "The Guns of Navarone".

Machine Pistol, as in MP40.

Yes, they remained in German inventory after WW1 and were issued to some artillery units and and tankers and such in WW2. Though as you can imagine, MP variants were probably preferred.

That the LP08 remained in inventory after WWI(for a while) is correct; but where did you get the info about WWII?

Ever seen a WWII pict with an LP 08 and an art. crew?
And an LP 08 would be the last pistol a tanker would choose, JMHO.

Reference please.

The only definite "reissued" LP08s I have seen were a few Reichsmarine unit marked LP08s and a very few Weimar police issued LP08s. I have never seen any photographic evidence of Wehrmacht use of LP08s.

As to tankers using LP08s, I can testify as a former tanker that the last sidearm an armored crewman would ever carry is an LP08. Our US tanks in the 1970s had a hell of a lot more spacious turrets than did ANY WWII tanks of either side.

I don’t have any sources to say definitively where they were issued other than a quick Wikipedia search. Just going off of my own hunches given the German military situation with industry and production both early in the war and by late 1944 onwards. LP08’s were used as a PDW of sorts. Even by 1918 with the advent of the Bergmann MP-18, they were an obsolete weapon. Likely issued to reservists and rear line groups.

Then don't you think it would be a good idea to say "I think" and not state such as fact?
Wikipedia- now there is an infallible luger source!

I don’t always have time to go digging through piles of sources for every question. Just try to synthesize what I see on this forum to try and help people with questions before everyone else gets here to better answer them.

I’m surprised that any historian, even a young one, would state as fact something that is only his uninformed opinion.

Fine, it’s gone now. Since is is a forum and not an academic conference, I assumed that anything said was implied as an opinion as opposed to set in stone fact unless accompanied by a source. Since this appears to not be the case, I’ll be sure to keep this in mind moving forward.

If you don't have time to do the research, what is the hurry to answer first?
This isn't a race, first does not "win" anything; I'd be more concerned with accuracy.

Here's a link to a post of an original US Army photo taken after WWII. The GI is holding an LP08 which in all likelihood was a Naval issue as Norway was home to German Navy occupation during the war.

Come on Guys. Give Quintin a break.

Welcome to the forum...............:) Like the black knight says..........a mere fleshwound.........

Information here or elsewhere on the net...........well, times it gets a little soft. So sometimes things have to pondered a while seems like.

Information based on historical documents probably has more meaning to some. Some others think seeing two other examples means it was always that way. So you kinda gotta go with the flow, keep what you want, and discard the rest............or perhaps file it away for later.

I agree, kinda hard on the kid; no real need for that really; not that I have a lot of room there. What would Mom say?

DonVoigt 10-28-2018 03:50 PM

My Mom would say, and did:
"if you don't know what you are talking about, be quiet."

Sounds like a lady we don't want to tangle with.

Norme 10-28-2018 04:47 PM

If Quintin thinks it's rough here wait 'till he enters academia, they'll crucify him if he can't back up his claims with documentary evidence. Why do you think God invented footnotes?

Hey guy's give him a break!!! Remember an expert is only someone a mile from home. One of the reasons I really like this forum is we generally, at least, do not jump all over anyone. Let's not start now. Bill
