Ruger 10/22 Rifle feedback and thoughts?
 

All,
Looking at buying a 22 rifle for plinking at the 75 yrd-ish range, something different than handguns.
The Ruger 10/22 gets very good marks, reviews, feedback, cost etc.

I've come to this group for any thoughts or knowledge on this gun in particular or Ruger in other weapons. I hesitate to go to a Ruger forum or site as there the information might be biased. Hoping for some un-varnished truth here.

Also if anyone has a RECOMMENDATION for another .22 rifle in a different brand would be happy for that too. Looking for rifle under $300 and then add a scope.

Any help would be appreciated.

I got mine back in the middle 70's still have it. Put thousands of rounds thru it. I pick off clays at 100 yards with iron sites. Get extra mags if you go with it. Easy to clean barrel comes off no problem

Mine is picky about federal ammo anything else is fine.

Wood stock I'm assuming? Read in a review elsewhere that someone stripped the stock and factory finished and refinished to a very nice effect with some TLC. Ever do any work on your stock if wooden?

We own several. Very good little plinking rifle. Extremely reliable and accurate, we use it to get groundhogs.

I highly recommend one! Fun and dependable. I just bought 4 25 round genuine Ruger bananna mags for mine. They were actually cheaper than off brand! REAL quality too. Ruger is a great company..good tech support if you ever need it.

I LOVE my Remington Nylons...but they are limited by their tube mags. The Ruger is a proven rifle. You simply cannot go wrong. Check at your local Walmart if they sell them. Or the used market..chancy though.


Lots of accesories available too.

Have four at my house, IMNSHO it's the best 22 autoloader one can have. You can certainly spend more but the number of versions and accessories can't be beat.

Never owned one but there are very few guns out there with greater aftermarket support. You can buy practically any widget for a 10/22.

I just took mine out a day ago..shot 150 rounds or so. Brand new Ruger mags. Had a couple of misfires..bad ammo. Stoppages are easy to clear with the 10/22. Mine is a carbine but the noise level isn't bad. With eargoggles it's hardly perceptable. There are likely dozens of YOU TUBE clips out there for comparisons. I watched one on comparing 25 round mags before I went looking for Genuine Ruger mags. No comparison! Buy the Ruger mags.

Get one.

I have owned a couple 10/22's. Not bad accuracy but not great either. Bought a bolt action CZ. Amazing accuracy. Just depends on what you want one for. Bill

The Ruger 10/22 is the small block chevrolet of the 22lr autoloader world. Often can buy the basic rifle for 200 or a bit less, or one can upgrade with custom parts that abound.

I have looked at a Ruger 10/22 RSI type for years, but not yet. With that said I have never owned a 10/22, but have lots of 22 rifles still. I am a lefty with rifle, so always afeared of that some.

The barrel is held to the receiver via a smooth tenion under tension of a two screw block. Some are looser than others, but the correct selection of loctite might be your friend or just thread the barrel and action.

With all the choices out there in aftermarket parts, barrels and triggers come into play. Even steel threaded receivers, the list is endless; even to tactical with 28 can openers on the forearm.

In less expensive autoloaders, the Marlin 60 might be mentioned. All blowback actions have their quirks about dirty chambers and being fully in battery, usually due to poor maintenance.

The bolt guns probably will be above your cost estimate, at least for the ones I am familiar with, but are gems in themselves without a lot of upgrades.

Ruger's service is pretty good, as long as you think original, out the door configurations.

In my own world, I like full sized 22 rifles; my favorites being two converted Ruger No.1's that I converted to rimfire myself. Just fun guns to me.

Hard to go wrong with the 10/22 for a lot of needs the big boys tell me.

Didn't someone make a shroud for the 10/22 to make it look like a German MG42? I might be dreaming but I kinda remember something like that.

Jerry, I’ve seen them done up to look just like an AR series rifle (except the
Ruger banana clip is a dead giveaway). I believe I have seen a post somewhere along the line about what you are thinking of.

I've had a 10/22 for many years and enjoy shooting it.



The magazine engagement and controls operation of mine took some time to get used to, but they may have updated it.



If you can find one, a bolt action CZ .22 LR rifle is a good alternate choice. They are similar to the .22 trainers issued in Germany and are high precision rifles at a reasonable price.



Something like the CZ 455...

Bought a 10-22 years ago, slapped a cheap scope on it and whacked hundreds of prairie dogs with it out to 100 yds. Mine is not finicky with ammo. I would recommend one to anyone looking for a reasonably priced rimfire rifle that's durable and accurate.
