C96 ejecting 2 rounds...

Well, my brother and went to the range with my 1930 C96 mauser. After loading 10, but only discharging 9 rounds, we were a little confused. It seems that the old girl kicked out one empty and a live round. Its rare, but it does happen. How does one go about fixing this? It has been rechambered in 9MM, and I have the heavier recoil spring in it.

You probably need a new magazine follower spring.

LugerDoc has worked on my brooms in the past and knows them well.

Chris, Unless you modified a standard mag follower, or have a grooved one from an original Red 9, the most 9mm rounds that will fit in your pistol is 9. TH

Curss 08-01-2018 01:35 AM

Lugerdoc, do you have a picture of a grooved follower that you could share?

DavidJayUden 08-01-2018 09:18 AM

I don't believe that the LugerDoc does photos.

Sorry don't have one, even if I took photos. The groove that I mentioned is just a smooth depression on the right side top of follower, so that it allows a 10th round of untappered 9mm to fit in the same space allowed for 10rds of bottle-necked 7.63x25mm rounds. TH

Ah, I will run some tests then with loading 9 rounds to see if that fixes the problem. I need test the accuracy with the stock anyway, so 2 birds, 1 stone!

I'd go the other way, start with 2 in the mag and work up!
See when the problem occurs.

With all respect to Tom, my 9mm brooms will all hold 10 rounds even without a "dimpled" follower. There was a thread a while back on the "dimple" and why it was there. Perhaps someone remembers it, and can post a link- it may have been here or the other forum.

Don, I suspose that a shorter mag spring will also allow the loading of a 10th round in the mag. TH

Could be, I've never "needed" to delve into that one.:D

But I'm thinking the OP's broom may be missing a leaf or two on its spring and thus "weak".

Chris,

If it turns out you need a new spring and Tom H does not have one here is another source to try.

They are almost always on back-order but I have ordered a couple and they always show up eventuality...
It's a really good reproduction spring in my book, not a real common part to find.
I believe they stock repro followers as well if needed.

I do have a repro magazine spring from Wolff gunsprings on standby. That would be my second guess, but it will require fitting, something that I tend to leave to gunsmiths (even though those are few and between and getting hard to find). I honestly don't mind if it is just a 9 round pistola, I'm just glad to have one that works reasonably.

This must be the relief cut Lugerdoc was speaking of! My gun definetly lacks this.

If you can get the follower out, you should be able to "fit" the new spring.

It may require nothing at all.

All Wolfsprings are marked " may require fitting" or some weasel words like that!

I have had mixed results with Wolff gunsprings. I think your right, start with 2 and work my way up to 9. If it doesn't work out, I'll try changing springs.
