What's with this S/42 magazine?

Whats up everybody? I've lurked here for a bit and finally signed up after purchasing my first Luger, a 1936 S/42.

I will hold off on posting pics until I have the pistol in hand and can take good ones to share.

Where I'm a little confused is with the magazine. It doesn't have the alpha suffix (p on this particular Luger), and the stamping appears slightly different than most I've seen, though the number does match the pistol's SN.

Could this be a period replacement? Or a right out fake? It was not sold as a matching gun as the side plate is mismatched. Scratching my head on this one.

Wish I had pics of the full magazine to share, but for the moment just wondering if anyone has seen a mag base stamped in this way.

Font appears wrong; base looks filed/ground. Look like a 'forced match'. The font matches the die sets I have gotten from American tool suppliers.

IMO it's not necessary to force match a magazine. The original users mixed them up so much that nowadays, a matched magazine is suspect...

I'd druther have a mismatched original than a filed/ground force match... :)

Agreed, however not beating myself up too bad as I assumed this could be the case. :burnout:

The "42" indicates a replacement magazine.
Would have been "unmarked" when new and in the system; marked somewhere along the line.
Could be legit or not.

Lots of folks "like" the unnumbered mags with the 42 or s/42- and are not above "adding" a number to make a "kind of a" match.

In your case for a mismatched pistol, it is neither here nor there. JMO.
