..possible purchase, request opinion..

.
I am thinking about purchasing this pistol from Legacy and would appreciate any info that members might be able to furnish that's in addition to Legacy's description - I've been looking at this particular pistol because it's dated with my Birth Year (1938) and would be easy for me to remember how old it is

I have my "collectable" Luger - a P06 7.65 Commercial (that I purchased from Legacy) - this pistol would be my "shooter"

here's the Legacy link : https://www.legacy-collectibles.com/...luger-ww2.html

thank you.....Bill

Some might think it a shame to shoot this one, which is in really good condition. I also think it might be several hundred bucks over-priced compared to collector-to-collector expectations (IMO).

If you want a shooter, I'd recommend buying a shooter! You will likely spend around half as much to achieve that goal, and pretty ones--nicely refinished, minor mismatched, or other easily correctable issues--would definitely not be out of running in the lesser price range.

As I wrote on the other forum, that is awfully nice to be a shooter.

And then again. That is the perfect shooter. :D

1 Not very old (relatively speaking), the best Lugers made ever.

2 Very well made.

3 Lots of those made.

4 Life's too short.:D

Mario,
Agreed! Can't fault your logic at all.

When I look for a shooter Luger, I try and find one that has - for one reason or another - had it's collectible value eliminated or reduced.

That makes acquisition possible at a "shooter" price (the collector value has already been eliminated and accounted for).

This beautiful Mauser Luger can certainly be a fine shooter. But you'll be acquiring it and paying for it's collectible value. Should shooting it cause damage that reduces or eliminates the collectible value of the gun, two things will happen:

- One more collectible Luger will be lost.
- The financial value of this particular Luger will be reduced.

My "shooter" Luger is an all matching 1937 Mauser Luger that has some holster caused pitting on the left side of the receiver. While it might be considered collectible because it is all matching and in the original finish, much of that collectible value is already eliminated because of the pitting "rash".

This doesn't affect it's ability to function properly and shoot accurately. If I break a matching part, it won't considerably reduce the pistol's value. I'll just replace the part.

If you want this one, buy it. If you want to shoot it, do so and enjoy the ride. (Oops... the site indicates this one was sold 4/30/2018 - did you buy it?)

BTW, this one has a particularly exaggerated Mauser "Hump". I've seen the hump be very subtle and this is one of the most extended ones I've seen. To have this variability, this milling step must have been either subject to a manual adjustment of tooling, or may have been done by hand... Interesting...

Everyone has an opinion on shooting a "collectible"; it is yours do what you wish.
I see no reason not too shoot it; if on the slim chance you break a numbered part, the loss in value will likely be less than buying another "shooter" luger. JMHO.

And there is "shooter" and "shooter".

You can shoot a couple of magazines on your Birthaday and the 4th of July. That is shooting of course, but it does not qualify as "shooter" in my book.:D

My 2 "shooters", both Mauser made, a 1941 and a 1938 have had their "collector" value brought down by added markings. But I do shoot them more than the average "shooter".

I am a regular Luger shooter, and not a Luger collector. That said, I do not own any valuable, rare, pristine WWl or WWll War Lugers. We all do what makes us happy......or I sure hope folks do!!
