luger on Gun Broker
 

Can anyone give me a reason why this rusty pitted 1910 DWM went for $1,425 on Gun Broker? Does it have some special features I don't see? If not, all I can say is WOW!

Uninformed buyers who can't find one locally. The Reserve Machinegun Company Unit marking is nothing special, as far I know.

I think I've even bought stuff from them. P38 parts kit, IIRC. ;)

wow, it never seems i get that amount on something for sale there....

I get CDNN e-mail flyers every day. About once a week or so, they send a list of the firearms they have up for sale on Gun Broker. I suspect that may explain the 2159 views. Come to think of it, that may also explain why it went for so high a price for a poj.
What do you guys think it should have gone for? I know I wouldn't pay much for it.

$500 is the max I would have considered it

There is just no explaining what stuff sells for on auction!

OK, I'll be the first to suggest the possibility of skullduggery. Yes, CDNN gets the word out in their daily e mails, and yes, they do have a wide variety of interesting stuff. But virtually everythng of theirs that I follow brings top dollar, and it's usually (always?) the first time I see it listed on auction.
Color me "suspicious".

And a "no reserve" auction will sell every time!

We have all scratched our heads over dumb stunts people pull when buying things at auction- I've even paid too much myself for something I "needed".:eek:

Ouch! I think Ed might even be a little generous in his estimate. But as the consensus seems, there's no tellin' about these things. And it's not restricted to Lugers, either. I recently tightened up my watch over what Erma toggle pistols are going for (not how much is asked). and the ones that actually sell seem to be commanding around a hundred bucks more, on average, than they did just a couple of years ago. That's great for the ones I bought before, but a certain insanity has slowly crept into the heads of people who buy these cast Zamak frame guns. It is a bit unnerving for me as a collector to have a bunch of loonies out there who will pay through the nose for crap!

Talk about CDNN getting top dollar, This one blew my mind.
A year ago I would have been lucky to get $500 for the one I have that's in just as good or better shape than this one.

I spend way too much time hoping to find Lugers at good prices. Constantly I find myself saying "Huh!" in seeing pistols that sell at prices that seem too high or two low.

IMO Luger availably tends to be a little cyclical, over maybe a 2-5 month span; at times the quantity of pistols offered at low/no reserve is thin, sometimes there are lots for sale. As Don points out, the low/no reserve pistols always sell and are therefore are a useful gauge of market value. IMO Luger availability is a bit thin right now at auction sites. My guess is, newer prospective Luger owners, who get into the market during a thin time, probably look for awhile then get over eager and over bid.

Several auctions are coming up in June at Rock Island, Amoskeag, Morphy. This pistol went high, but I am hoping this June might be a good time to buy. For sure, last June was an excellent month for buyers with several fine acquisitions reported by collectors on the forums.
