Single Shooting????
 

Finally had the chance to shoot my code 42 1940 pistol today.
With 4 rounds in the mag I am only able to shoot one round off. The next round chambers but will not fire. If I pull the action back and eject the round the next one will fire but the following round will not. It seems like the trigger is not resetting. Ejection appears to be brisk, watched my son shoot it, empties all go up and out and on the last round the action stays open. It is all matching except for the side plate. I seem to recall a thread on this issue but could find it.

Some folks recommend using masking take over the back end of the grip frame where the rear toggle hits the frame. This is to gauge how hard, or even if, the toggle is smacking the frame during the ejection process. Sounds like it isn't going back far enough to reset, otherwise it is a trigger issue and out of my pay grade.
If you manually cycle the toggle it does fire, or click, correct?

Look at two things. First, the little plunger on the front end of the sear bar. Make sure it operates smoothly, and will pop back out without binding. Lubricate it with a thin oil if needed. It may be dirty and gritty inside, and thus need cleaning.

Next, pay attention to the firm support you provide in your grip and in the position of your arms while shooting. Make sure that the recoil pulse pushes back through your arm bone structure into your shoulders.

When I manually cycle it does shoot the next round off.
Forgive my ignorance, where can I find an exploded view with parts list so I know what I am looking for regarding the sear plunger.

Based on some quick research, it also could have something to do with the sideplate itself as that is what operates the sear connection from the trigger on the Luger, IIRC. If you get the chance, try shooting it again and apply some pressure to the sideplate after you fire the first round and see if the problem persists. It could be that is what is needed to release the sear bar. Best way to fix the issue would probably be to try and find another sideplate altogether.

Also, watch the side plate from the top when you cycle the gun. If it bows out under spring pressure it needs to adjusted to not move.

So I found a large clear exploded view with a parts list on an American Rifleman post. The trigger bar plunger was rusted tight. I removed the trigger bar and applied some Kroil and a few taps with a brass drift broke the plunger free. It's moving freely now. I'll give it another go tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for all the input. Freeing up that little plunger made all the difference. Three rounds no issue.
