Stock Lug Question
 

What are the physical differences between an early (DWM 1914 â?? 1920) stock lug, and a later Mauser stock lug, other than the little indents near the top of the lug on the Mauser?

Jamese, That's the most readily identifable feature, but for more detailed photos, see Gibson's "Krieghoff Parabellum" book. TH

Randall Gibson, in his legendary book on the Krieghoff Parabellum, pages 28-29 gives one of the best answers to this question around, IMO. You have already mentioned the major difference: the Muuser stock lug has deep indentations on each side of the upper part of the lug. Gibson theorizes that the factory used the lugs to attach the frame to the machining jig to enable all the shaping to be done to the frame. Thus the stocklug, after 1918, and except for carbines and other long barrel models, was a manufacturing aid and not especially for attachment of stocks.

The reason for asking is I have the ability to purchase a repo stock board at a good price, but it will not fit my 1917 correctly, however it does fit my 1937 Mauser.

Jamese, Again, Gibson's book mentions that there are indeed differences, although slight, in shape and size of the lugs, so some stocks fit and others don't. I usually have trouble turning the lug lock all the way. I guess "fine tuning", such as filing, etc., could be done, but at the risk of marring the finish. Then if you are successful in fitting it on, then trying to shoot it at a public range, we can go into a whole other thread of the legality of doing this.

Jamese, You are correct that most of the repro luger stock lugs were designed to fit the Mauser rather than the DWM. With some judicious filing a the top of the inside channel of the metal on stock, they can be made to fit you DWM or Erfurt LPO8. Please don't file on the pistol. TH

thank you for your help, I didn't plan on filing the gun. A little tweaking to the inside channel of the stock should get it to fit correctly.
