I am taking a crash course on the Luger pistol. I can use help.

For openers - am I in the right forum topic here, does a 1917 Erfurt fall under the heading of military Lugers?

Specific question: am I correct in thinking that the 1917 Erfurt would be chamber in 9x19mm? I am looking at a shooter Erfurt as a first P08 acquisition and strongly prefer that caliber.

An answer to that specific question , and a synopsis on how Erfurt Imperial fits into the overall history of the P08 would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, Erfurt Lugers are military Lugers, and yes, the P.08 Luger is 9 mm (unless someone has rebarreled it.) Erfurt was a goverment-owned royal arsenal. The stickies (I know, there are a lot) contain all of this and more. You might want to spend some time reading through those for a quick crash course. ;)

Me too. Been taking it for nine years now. No end in sight. :(

Welcome to Luger World. There is a lot to learn but fortunately there are a number of people on this forum who have documented there many years of knowledge in the stickies and in comprehensive books. I have found the members of the forum very helpful and open to sharing their opinions and knowledge. Sometimes you will get feedback that you don't want to hear but which you need to hear before making a big purchase. Other times you will get some unexpected, welcome news of a great deal on a rare find. Either way, you will learn a lot by participating. I encourage you to study first and narrow down the era of pistol which interests you and define what you are looking to do with it- a collector item or a shooter. Then share pictures of anything that you are looking to purchase before you go too far down the road. Friends on this site pulled me away from the brink on a couple of possible purchases before I finally settled on a pre-WW1 Erfurt pistol that was unit signed and offered at a very fair price. Lugers may seem rare at first but there are actually a good number for sale and in a wide range of quality/price which is why we will all urge you to study first.

Thanks guys. Crash course is going well. I have learned much in 2 weeks , and have twitched at the keyboard a few times , but no Luger yet.
