Hi iam new to the forum and have recently acquired 2 Lugers and 2 p38s I have been researching the Lugers and belive I somewhat know what they are but I guess iam looking for a second opinion from you guys that actually know the guns much more than me guessing this is the first one I will post the second after this one is identified

Chime in if I'm wrong, but shouldn't that be an "S/42" instead of a "42" code for a 1939 variant? Cool picture of the toes, by the way.

mweaver 12-22-2017 09:19 PM

I knew somebody would say somthing about the toes lol didn't even notice them till I uploaded it

Per Jan Still
Quote:

The change from S/42 to 42 code, from the mid to late test proof, and from the E/63 to E/655 acceptance stamp all occur during 1939. During 1939 Mauser produced approximately 26,300 S/42 code Lugers in the 4100n-3700q serial range and 93,000 42 code Lugers in the 2000q-5000z serial range for the German military.
So, a 1939 (year), Mauser made luger for the army

Thats a quick collection - 2 lugers - 2 P38's - was it a good deal or do you like to go full bore? :)

buying books too :)

This is the second one

Same thing as the 1st, but made in 1942 - to my eye...

These will never be for sale but what are they worth

9311 is unusually nice, very little bluing wear and no damage or signs of hi jinx that I can see. Do the internals and the magazine match, and does it include a holster, etc? (For both guns).
Closeups of the front and rear grip straps, side plates, etc, can help us evaluate condition too.
Just a real W. A.G. would be around $2k on either one, but again we really need more info, better photos, etc.
But they are both very nice guns.

All internals match on both guns the 353 side plates have 353 wrote on the inside not stamped like the other. Both have mags but neither are the matching ones and no holsters and I will try to get the pics u request Tommorow thanks guys I appreciate all the help

Any chance 9311u has been reblued? Looks like someone put the white stuff in the Gesichert.

I once asked a newer member at the time, oh what does
"Para Belllum" mean - I mean - was I being stupid that night? Hopefully intoxicated, but likely just --- off

I agree with the above - a 1939 S/42 is worth just a bit less than a byf in my opinion. $1700-$2000 - depending on if all matching - if the 1939 has a matching magazine, then add a couple hundred (easy), byf lugers have bakelite bases and so technically easily 'matched'...

Nice Lugers. The "9311u" Luger should have the number "93" or "94" stamped inside the side plate.

The "353" Luger should have the single number "3" or "4" or no number stamped inside the side plate.

IIRC, the "u" and "v" block was generally reserved at Mauser for commercial contract guns. This is a military accepted pistol in that block. Perhaps the earlier time(s) they ran through the block, they used them for military contracts?

In order to confirm retail prices for these guns, look at the larger and more reliable online sales sites. Simpson Ltd, Checkpoint Charlies, Legacy Collectibles are a few. The retail pricing should be about 30% higher than direct collector pricing, and represents an insurance replacement value.

High condition Mauser Lugers that are all matching and collectible are in the prices you've been quoted here. As Ed mentioned you can turn the "42" date Luger into a "matching" magazine one with an original "fxo" milled magazine with black plastic base. These cost more than similar magazines because people know that.

You'll probably enjoy the FAQ document we maintain for free distribution at this site. Just follow the links starting with the "FAQ" link at the top of every forum page.

Welcome to the forum!
