opinions on this luger on GB

Hello, new here...getting into collecting German guns and thought it was time to consider a Luger. This one peaked my interest and i hoped to learn from your opinions and comments. I know i need to order a book and gain knowledge

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/724882727

when i bought my M1 Garand i looked into auctions similar to this one...beautiful pics....guns sold for $500 over market+....i ended up buying a collector grade off the CMP forum from a member for much less....

the finish on this gun looks too good to me to be real

Norme 12-12-2017 07:13 PM

Hi David,
Welcome to the forum! That gun looks fine to me, I expect it'll go much higher before the 5 days are up, like over 2k.
Regards,
Norm

The finish does look good, but it passes the basic tests for original finish. There are halos on the barrel serials, wear seems consistent on all parts, s-link is in the white. If I was looking for a nice '37 with strawed parts and a matching magazine I would consider it.

What about the fire blue toggle pin??

battering ram 12-12-2017 08:03 PM

What is the holster worth by itself ?

gunbugs 12-12-2017 10:25 PM

That looks like a pretty gun. The holster is probably 250.00+. If I needed that gun, I wouldn't be afraid to bid 1900 or so. Figure the pistol by itself at 1600.00+. Then add the holster.....You can't pay too much for a good gun. But, that's just my opinion, which ain't worth much.

My '36 has both the front and rear toggle links fire blued, and they are almost as bright as the toggle links on this gun, i.e. looks fine to me.

from looking at past SOLD auctions it appears these usually sell pretty high...i see $2500 on some of them....lowest is $2,200....i am willing to get into the $2,000s but not $2,500.....just trying to add in the value of the holster.

having such nice pictures always seems to add so much value and extra bidders...its what caught my attention....so many pics and all high quality....

i just threw my bid in the mix......sadly i think from past auction sales it will be higher

thanks for your help.....now to order that book

so, is a pre-USA into the war Luger what you are looking for? (war officially started with invasion of Poland in 1939)

I like to say, find out what you're interested in - technically any military or police luger that left Germany after 1945 could have been in the war.

But, if looking for WW2 lugers, any Mauser made Luger would fit the bill for me, but if wanting to be technical, I would look for 1939 and newer - but any mauser made luger would be K date and newer with 1939, 1940, 41 and 42 army would fit the bill or police, same time period.

Anyway, my advice is always, figure out if you want army, navy or police - imperial, weimar or nazi

i like the strawed and beginning of 37 was it....this gun has everything id want.....but it also has everything others want too....i like to buy quality and a bit rare...

ww2 not as important, but id assume it saw service?

What hasn't been mentioned is that matching # magazine, most experienced collectors figure that adds 25% to the value of a high condition gun.

The one time I asked about a Gunbroker luger here someone here went and bid on it and WON.

There is always that risk...in this case i dont think the bidding will be close...i will be out bid by hundreds....sadly i cannot find any similar to mine that hasnt sold for a much higher price on GB..typically $2800

i prefer a forum member sale and not a GB auction....a set price and its done vs waiting 10 days just to get outbid with 1 minute left on the clock

this is my first dabble into Lugers....im in the learning phase...if i win thats great!!....if i lose ill keep learning and on to the next one...

DavidJayUden 12-13-2017 01:11 PM

You are setting your sights pretty high on that one. I'm guessing that a lot of collectors would like to dump their 1937 and upgrade to that one.
There are lots of other very nice Lugers available in the $2k range, but in the end, remember that it's only dirty paper...

Happens all the time; reason some boards don't allow links to current auctions.

Got to hate it when that happens, but then maybe they were watching it already!

The swastika grips are a fantasy item. Someone ruined what looks like a fine pair of original grips to make them by adding those badges... too bad. Even though they appear to be original and matching numbers to the gun, since thay are modified, they detract from the value IMHO. The pistol was made in later part of 1937 after the change from strawed small parts to blued finish.

battering ram 12-13-2017 02:27 PM

it comes with 2 sets of grips...original #'d AND those Nazi party grips....they are just an extra....i figured after market/repro something
