Which of the two firearms have had more survivors, Walther P38 or Lugers? Eric

No one can know! Any answer is a guess. JMHO.

Lugers were made/used in two wars; Walther P38's in only one. :)

You could start your own data base (list), it will give you something to do when you're not asking questions on the forums.

If someone found something like that, it might be a treasure trove of info.

I believe that all Army records stored in Kansas City or some place in the mid-West were lost in a fire in 1973. I know my records were lost.

Knowledge implies you "know" something- which means accurately.
How can an unknowable, un-provable answer be "knowledge?

Any answer to your question of survival will only be an opinion, not knowledge.

Opinion is knowledge gained!! Often a fine start!! The number of cartridge counters is knowledge, fifty! How many survive is an opinion!! Big difference! I used to have to pay experts in trial for $500/hr. The insurance company would pay double believing their opinion was better because the payed more! The opinions of our forum members are priceless, honest including your own!!

Yes~But every man does't own a luger or few~I gained my knowlege from reading over 10k in posts and I still know little! I never forget the feel of a 1914 DWM artillery and the many hands whose lives depended on it! That is why everyone is invited to add to their Own Luger Love Story!

The real question is which one survived.
And for that there is an easy answer. The P38 did.

Adopted in 1961 to replace the Luger it is still in use in our armed forces today.

Survived the use in our 3 front colonial war that lasted from 1961 to 1974.

any copies of the capture forms would be long, long gone. The military doesn't keep forms unless they are told to keep them, so usually once a soldier leaves the unit, the forms are destroyed. I have always heard that the bring back paperwork was in 2 or 3 copies - two being with the gun is not uncommon - and I assume that a copy went to some customs bloke or the like. But again, there might be a stash of them that someone misplaced or kept, but they would not have kept longer than a few years in almost every case.

I am sure it happened, but I have never heard of the documents being copied or being annotated on official military records. I have heard rumors that ''some'' marine records were annotated...

Stacks of original, unused bring-back papers were circulating on the net some years ago. A skilled faker with a fountain pen can dummy up almost anything you want with one of these in hand. This is one of the reasons I don't place much value in them, unless the provenance is solid from the original GI.

About the same time I frequently saw dealers selling carbon paper at gun shows.
