P08 Magazine Identification
 

I've been looking for spare magazines to use on my 1916 DWM P08.
I came across this one in an old military surplus store.

Is someone able to please identify this magazine.

It's an East German post war police magazine. "2" would have been the second magazine of the set that accompanied a pistol when issued.

2/1001 is the concealment code of Ernst Thalmann in Suhl Germany. There were two Thalmann sites in Suhl. 1/1001 and 2/1001 were the concealment codes.

These are very high quality and usable magazines and make excellent magazines for shooter Lugers. The machined and welded body is the best of all the magazines produced for the Luger.

This was previously the Haenel/Schmeisser operation, taken over by the state after WW-II.

I also picked up 2 mint condition Swiss magazines in nickel, I think they're made by Rudolf Pfanninger.

I've no idea when these were made?

1960's or 70's I think - all my books are in Washington and I am in Pennsylvania. I have had a brown base one in my shooter artillery for about 14 years, excellent magazines.

What you need is a wood based magazine to go looking correct for your pre-1926 period.

Hi Ed thanks for the input on the Swiss magazines.
I do have the original 1916 matching numbered magazine for my Luger, but do not shoot with it. I've been looking for decent quality spare magazines to shoot with.

It seems like I'm getting there with the 3 magazines that I've managed to track down here in SA this past week.

HI GT I'm going to give these magazines a try at the shooting range in the next couple of days and decide. If I do keep them, I'm sure I'll be able to source a couple more of these here. Will let you know.

Has anybody done a Magazine marks chart that you could quickly consult?

Great question Doug. I don't think this has been done... It would be nice of one of the guys who specialize in collecting magazines would start such a thread...

Probably the best and most complete reference for all markings found on lugers and it's magazines is Costanzo's "World of Lugers -- Proof marks" published in 1977. I have an spare copy available @$250 + $20 S&H in USA. There are several other books that specialize in military and police unit markings, but none as complete or as easy to use for factory or National markings. Probably the best source for postwar and Soviet block markings is Buxton's "The P38 Pistols --- Volume 3" which shows the markings on P38s, but same were used on many DDR, Russian, CZ, etc reworked PO8s.
