P38 Holster Question

George Anderson is selling several P08 and P38 holster reproductions in this thread -

http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthread.php?t=37766

I notice that the P38 holster has the second flap on the side (in addition to the top flap). I had thought that side flap was only for the 'flashlight Luger'...

Do all P38 holsters have this side flap??? Or is this a 'free style interpretation' of a P38 holster???

(Lemme see if I can link Geo's pic...)

It makes it easy to grasp the grip and draw the pistol!

I'm not sure if it's authentic? I posted pics almost a year ago but there was no response at that time. Tried to trade it for a P08 holster some time back but the other party must have decided against it, never heard back.

I would think the flap serves as some quick draw purpose?

Not sure about P38 holsters, but the Polish P64 has a very similar holster. It's very difficult to draw the pistol anything near quickly without moving the second flap. Obviously a holster with a better design could have been developed, but as they are you need the second flap movable to access the pistol rather than digging it out of the holster.

Apparently the answer is yes, mine is real.

Sheepherder,

The P38 holster you posted the link to is an original wartime holster. Made by "jwa", Moritz Stecher in 1944. This is what is know as a Russian Capture holster. A large number of these unissued holsters were imported from Russia/Ukraine back in 1999.

$30 for that holster is a bargain! Whoever got it?

This style of holster began to appear in 1943, and eventually was to replace the hard shell style. It's know as a "break-away" holster. This is because when you pull the closure strap up, the flap lifts, and the inner "break away" flap opens up, and allows the user to easily remove the pistol. No lift strap needed. This holster was much easier and cheaper to produce.

Spanner,

Your holster is also original. Appears to be a "jhg" 1944 date. This is for GECO. Proof should be WaA41.
