American Eagle Proof Survey
 

A few days ago I asked a question about 1906 American Eagle proofs, which nobody came up with a convenient answer to. So, I am going to take the bit between my teeth and try to find the answer the long way.

I am collecting data on the proofs found on American Eagle (only) versions of 1900, 1902, and 1906 Lugers. They will be most likely be Crown/BUG, lazy Crown/N, or no proof. Hopefully, the statistics will reveal something about Luger production.

I will maintain the confidentiality of all participants. When I eventualy post the results they will be model, serial number, and proof only, with no connection to an individual.

The survey is best served by inclusion of the full serial number, xx's are frustrating and don't allow the statistics to completely focus the results.

I've started the process by searching the online dealer sites, and any other source I could find, which makes this information available. This is why there are some xx serial numbers. The no-serial-numbers also come from dealer sites. The Test Eagle examples are included simply because they were there--I am not trying to duplicate Ron Wood's work, but simply report the samples as they come in.

Also, if you are reporting a 1906AE, please note if it is in .30 cal. or 9mm.

The very first 1900 American Eagles probably started at serial number 2002, and according to my records the first 200 or there about had no proof marks other than a Swiss cross proofed barrel. I have sent my very short data base to your "pacifier" email address.

Hi Dwight,

Nice study. As mentioned earlier, the Crown/N appeared as replacement of the Crown/B/U/G as the result of a changed 1911 proof law.

If I look at your results (without any reference on AE production totals to back me), I would say that the 1911 turnover point must be somewhere between serials 459xx and 51xxx.

It would be very interesting to see more AE serials in that range. I doubt if calibre would have influence on the marking.

I received confirmation that serial number 2001 is also a 1900 American Eagle. It is a cased presentation piece. No information on what proofs it may have.

I will send you some additional serial numbers and markings by email.

I've just acquired a 1906 AE s/n 48724. BBL proof is crown B/U/G--172,28.. Receiver proof is crown B/U.

Is bbl proofing common or rare?? Thanks Al
