Dunkirk movie
 

Saw it today in IMAX. Stunning movie to see in that format. Wondering how others feel about it. But sadly not a P.08 to be seen in it.

I think I'm going to see it tomorrow, looks like a good one and got very good reviews. No IMAX here though, have to make do with a regular screen.

I saw it on the regular screen and really enjoyed it. Actually P.G, not too bloody at all.

I am looking forward to seeing Dunkirk soon. The reviews and movie trailers are enticing. If you want to see P.08s go see the recent Wonder Woman movie.

I saw it yesterday (non-IMAX) and thought it was great. A little confusing at first as the time line jumps around, but a super flick!

Wow... the review in USA Today is really as politically correct as it can possibly be: "the fact that there are only a couple of women and no lead actors of color may rub some the wrong way". In any case, I saw it the other day, and it's a really good movie. However, there are some details that detail oriented geeks like me will find more distracting than the lack of diversity. For example, I got serious "Battle of Britain" vibes from the Bf 109s being HA-1112s with Hispano-Suiza engines. Another annoying detail is a burning Spitfire without engine and the propeller mounted to a long piece of pipe. The dive bombing technique used by the Ju 87's seemed to be quite a bit off as well, to me it looked more like strafing runs than actual dive bombing. On the flip side: The aircraft in the air battle scenes appear to be the real McCoy, not some cheesy CGI.

I only have one real complaint: The movie throws you right into the action, without much explanation of what lead up to the event. If you're planning to see it together with someone without much knowledge of WWII, you may want to explain the history behind it. I saw it together with my son and his buddy and I'm glad I told them about the background while we were on out way to the theater. They still had a lot of questions after the movie, like why the Germans didn't just roll in to annihilate them while they had the chance.

Some complaints I've heard is virtually no mention of the French and the overplayed importance of the "little ships".

I haven't seen it yet, but I enjoy any historical movie, so.

Yes, that USA Today review and comment regarding diversity is puzzling. Just how diverse was the British army and British citizens and other Allies engaged in that battle in 1940? When I watch a film set in time I look more for historical accuracy
and less for diversity for diversity sake.

The jerking of the scenes and time lines became a bit confusing for me...not to mention frequently annoying. The action was disrupted. :confused:

As Olle mentions the opening could have provided more background to set the stage for the movie and especially the characters. Boom there you are in the middle of some fight.

The only glaring prop bungle was the burning Spitfire. I guess the engine disappeared and the propeller was just attached to some long pole. :rolleyes:

While the movie was entertaining and enjoyable for a guy that likes war movies and action adventure genre, I would not rate it very high.

Yes, the bombing scenes just looked bad to me. The rest of the flight action was pretty good.
I do feel the director could have done a better job of depicting the scope of the event at the start of the film.

I finally saw this film last weekend. I have mixed reviews on it.

First the bad;

- The timeline skipping back and forth was extremely annoying.

- Beginning of the movie should have set up the story of this battle in history better. Also should have introduced the characters better. I still don't know the characters names!?!?!

- the "High" point in the movie, where all the boats started to arrive, really wasn't that high of a point in the movie. It was just flat to me.

- Ending was really lame. It really didn't hit home how important this event was to the war.

Now the good;

- Aviation scenes were great! It was great to finally see a WWII movie that used real aircraft (although some were post war Spanish models obviously), rather than going with crappy CGI. I wish more films would do this.

- Opening combat scene was great! Should have been longer or more in depth though, but great to scare the crap out of the audience right away.

The earlier versions had Hispano engines the latest version had RR Merlins.

Ha, saw it today in standard format. Very loud, had to turn my ear aids down all the way. Agreed with others that the scene jumping was a PITA, however the effect of taking a small slice of the whole affair worked. The most constant thread was the Brit gent, his son and the nice pleasure boat Now to the aircraft, in one scene the spit is pounding the heinkel with slow firing canon, I believe at that point in the conflict canon had not been deployed on a spit. The Ju87's did appear to be doing strafing runs and did not drop multiple bombs from the trapeze as depicted. That last spit flying got enough glide distance out as though he started at fl60 and the wheel down dead stick on the beach is a far stretch. Final comment, no kidding, in the beginning that Brit lad started with a Mk 4 smle and ended with a jamming mk 3, IIRC. In my 55 plus years of Lee Enfields, never had a jam, that is why they are such great battle rifles :cheers:

19th Squadron received their first canon equiped spitfires in June 1940. Just how far in June I don't know. Canon trials go back to 1938/1939.

There's a picture of a downed spitfire in Dunkirk...it has the 8 machineguns.
