C. Whittaker's Article...
http://www.landofborchardt.com/
If you go to the top of C. Whittaker's web site, there is a hot link for "Luger Literature"...then click on the link for "Articles". One article, titled "1903 Experimental Toggle Link Assembly" is quite fascinating... It deals with a "reversed" toggle design... |
Thank you Pete.
Very interesting. |
Hi,
Interesting. Also interesting that no surviving European version of this same patent has been located (yet?).... It seems Georg was trying to get rid of the Luger 'ears' in order to prepare the toggle mechanism for his rifle design. |
I get a server error when trying this link... right now the luger literature page says no current articles???

Tried it again...works fine from here...

I find this design ergonomically inferior to the standard toggle. Think about it: As you pull back the standard toggle it naturally rolls back (clockwise from left) with the fingers. With the toggle as part of the forward link this does not occur, in fact the opposite rotation occurs, and one would be inclined to pull up rather than back: This is certainly possible but much more awkward, especially with an early luger where an initial the backward pull is necessary to clear the toggle lock.
I am hardly an expert but my initial response to this patent is that it was intended to foil similar copycat designs on the toggle mechanism. KFS |
