New to the club with a 1916 Erfurt

Hello all!

This place has been such a treasure trove of information, I used it extensively when selecting a Luger for purchase.

I decided long ago that being as I'm young, I would seek out shooter examples of guns and decide if I want to collect a particular type down the road some ways. This is a perfect companion to the 1917 Erfurt 98AZ I also own and was a major driving factor in why I decided I'd want an Erfurt Luger as well. After getting this Luger, I am now prowling for its old arch nemesis from the German Army trials: The C96!

Here is an album of the beast: (EDIT: attached some photos. Some additional shots can be found at the album as there were only so many slots to add pictures)
1916 Erfurt P.08

I paid $1300 all said and done. The non matching parts are the magazine (numbered to 1433, has a Police #1 and last 2 digits of my gun stamped into the bottom face of the floorplate, is a Berlin Police Academy magazine from what I'm able to find on it, not pictured here but will add a picture later as I'm able), rear axle pin (numbered 78), hold open (also numbered 78), right grip is a WW2 replacement numbered to match with Waffenampt proofs, and barrel.
The barrel is a particular mystery to me, as it is minty fresh bore wise, and has only got the mysterious stampings "E P 3" which I am woefully unable to take a decent picture of.

Can anyone see something I'm missing here? I'm dying to learn all I can about this awesome relic from 1916.

Thanks in advanced!

So, you have a WW1 Erfurt that later went to police usage.
It would not have had a rear toggle numbered to start, this was in the 30's about same time as the police sear safety :)

So I knew about the sear safety (still trying to figure out how that influences the trigger group), but the number at the rear most of the toggle assembly is another sign of police usage?

I'm still really wishing someone will be able to tell me about the barrel...it's not something I've found any documentation for in all the internet searching I've done.

The barrel markings of EP 3 have been discussed before, I asked myself some years back.
But I am drawing a complete blank at present.

A replacement barrel but mfg by ??? Maybe Finland???

Have you tried a forum search?

Yes but I have been unable to turn up anything conclusive. I can't seem to nail down how to search for a specific string, not a series of wild cards. I'll keep searching, unless someone else happens to beat me to it.

This mentions the EP3 barrel. Sounds like a Norwegian Army replacement.

Nice looking Luger!

Nice looking Luger!

My thanks, sir! That was the biggest question mark I had concerning this gun, that's amazing as I myself have some not inconsiderable Norwegian and German lineage. That just gave this particular piece 100x more value to me personally.

I can't wait to take her out shooting! Got it from Simpson's in my native Illinois, they were a joy to do business with.

Hey Don! Don't you have a Norwegian rig?

It would be nice if you attached some pictures of this Luger. :)

And from your Kar98AZ, also a scarce piece on its own.
And welcome to the club - Luger are unique guns although highly addictive.

Attach your photos directly to your post by using the "Go Advance" button to make your post entry. Then there is a "manage attachments" button to allow you to post your photos.

Photos that are hosted elsewhere, often disappear when the hosting website reorganizes its holdings, or goes out of business.

In addition, many of the more knowledgeable people on this forum are unable to see your photos posted elsewhere because they access the forum from their place of employment where internet web storage sites are filtered or prohibited. If they can't see your photos, they can't offer comments or advice.

Thanks, and welcome to the Lugerforum.

I had hosted them on Imgur because they could have more fidelity there, I will add them to my OP instead when I get home, and when the weather clears up, I'll take the Erfurt siblings out for a group photo shoot.

I understand why you'd want them attached, I just thought I was being smart by using the hosting service.

Yes,, that is why I "thought" it was Finn!
Norway , Finland, blonde-land, some where up north.

I have again demonstrated that : a) I can't remember worth shucks or b) I have too many lugers. I prefer the first explanation.

Thanks for finding the link.

Sheepherder, pictures attached for the convenience of other members.

Douglas, I will get the 98AZ out for a photo op with the P.08 one of these days here. It's been non stop raining here, otherwise I'm going to do some outdoors photos with these beauts.

It's for your benefit, not theirs. Some of our most knowledgeable members work for The Government or Big Business who provide them with their computers and Internet access. To safeguard their investment, those establichments block many social web sites, especially those with pretty pictures. Not a bad deal - free PCs/laptops and unlimited Internet/data. And they get to take it all home with them. :)

But it means if you want their advise/comments, you have to post your pics here.

There may come a time, if you stay here, that you'll do a Search for a specific subject and the thread you want won't have any pics...Because the OP posted them off-site...And they're gone... :crying:

Well if you do have too many Lugers, I think there are some folks on here that would help you out with that problem. Myself included!

Friend, if it was the right price, I'd be inclined to help too! Of course at this time I'm looking at acquiring a shooting example of a C96....

Speaking of which, brief side bar from this Luger, anyone have any suggestions as to where I could find one? I know Simpson's has a fist full of them, but none are what I'd refer to as a shooter, which would be in decent mechanical shape and either no finish or it's been refinished...

Thanks in advanced for any advice you could offer!
