Fonts on Mag

7 Attachment(s)
All, I picked this up today and for the price It was worth a shot.
My concerns are this.

The fonts seem to be a bit small for the period of mag it is.

The wood that the base is made of I have seen on Erfurt mags but not so much on early DWM mags.

Overall its a great mag with Verdigris on the mag tube and concentrations of it at the area where wood am metal meet.

What do you guys think? Good or renumbered?

My question is did they use beech for bottoms that early? I say early due to the location of the numbers. I at least have never seen an early oak bottom. Maybe there were?? Bill

I associate those lighter stripes with beech wood that came at the end of WWI and later. My expectation is that an early DWM wood bottom would be walnut.

I'm sure someone will come along and correct my expectations...

I think it is a late commercial mag that has had "old style" military numbers added in the wrong font size.

Hi Wayne,
The magazine you show has definitely been renumbered. Quite apart from the fact that beech was not used for magazine bases or grips prior to 1916, the serial numbers are inverted. I show a genuine early magazine below.

It's a fake made from a early post WWI commercial DWM mag. All of Don's observations are correct.

Live and learn. Paid a price of a standard mag so no loss.

Thanks Gents
