New Guy with First Luger

Hello!

My residence is out of state so had it shipped back to Ohio.

Its a 1940 dated code 42 mauser. It should be here by the end of the week and appears to be a bit rough, but all matching externally other than the mag.

Will post pics ASAP and thanks for letting me join! I wanted a shooter so that was my goal.

will have more once it gets here

The grips have either been crudely re checkered or are replacements.

Looks like a good shooter Luger and project gun. Have fun and let the learning begin!

I figured they are cheap replacements. I will take more pics when it gets here and strip it down as well.

I have some Vopo grips I can put on it for fun.

I'm a budding DDR collector as well. I just bought my first Trabant as well.

A breakdown with a good inspection and cleaning will likely have it looking better....also a good lubing while down. It looks like it can be a good shooter for you. Let us know how things go at the range when time allows. Congrats on your first Luger.

thanks! I hopefully will be able to get it in my hands by the end of the week.

Agreed, since they are so much smaller than the frame.

I apologize that I can't find it but is there a FAQ or reference for magazine identification? I would like to find more info on both of my mags

DonVoigt 04-13-2017 09:13 AM

Did you try the search feature?
There are many threads on mags, and nearly every thread with a luger has info on mags.

Sometimes you just have to dig and read a lot of posts to learn.

One of your mags is obviously a Haenel mag, and has the Haenel "H" or and "x" on the base, I can't quite decide from the picture.

Clear, close and well focused pictures of the mags would get you more info.

well everyone I finally had some evening time.

Took it apart and took some pics.

it looks like everything matches except for the grips and the mags. The mag release spring is broken so that explains the dropped mag release in the pic

Eugen 04-18-2017 09:31 PM

Wolff Springs has replacement springs for P.08s or you can probably get what you need from Lugerdoc; he has parts and does repair work.

Get that bad boy lubed and assembled and the go shoot it like you hate it!

thats the plan! Think I should replace the firing pin? It matches now so I thought perhaps?

the milled haneal mag doesnt fit will

alanint 04-19-2017 09:23 AM

Keeping everything matching would have no effect on value in this case. Another firing pin is a good idea as a maintenance issue, but breaking the original will not affect value.

agreed. I would be bummed though if I broke the originall 88 firing pin. I ordered a wolff spring kit, new mag release springs, and a spare firing pin.

I definitely want to change the grips.

rhuff 04-19-2017 03:23 PM

Sounds like you are on the road to learning about your Luger, and getting it range ready. Stick with normal velocity FMJ ammo when you get ready to take it to the range.

fury413rb 05-04-2017 11:38 PM

I replaced the mag release leaf spring, trigger bar leaf spring, trigger spring, and firing pin spring.

The action spring seems really strong so I havent replaced that or any of the other springs in the wolff kit.

When the trigger resets it is catching on something. I put the original firing pin back in it and its smoother during cocking the striker but the trigger is definitely catching on something.

I think its in the side plate? All the parts match.
