Mauser 1939 Luger and Papers Review Request
 

Hello Everyone,

Trying to determine value on a 42-code Luger. All numbers are matching except mag. Also, has a holster and trophy papers.

Thanks for your time and consideration!

Spare mag? tool? I know locally I'd be in for $1500. It could bring closer to $2k. But let's see what the others say.
Overall it looks like a nice old gun, about the right amount of wear, but not abused or messed-with.

David, thanks for the quick response. No spare mag and it does have a tool; looked like it was aluminum though.

By "trophy papers" you mean bringback papers??? IMHO they do not add any value to the pistol at all. They are nice if you are planning a display for a veteran, but if the seller thinks they add a couple hundred to the perceived value, he is mistaken. :rolleyes:

I put bringback papers in the same category as the receipt/bill of sale for the pistol. Nice to have but no monetary value. ;)

Yes, the bring back papers. Thought i was good to have matching serial numbers on both pistol and papers. If papers do not add, what's the worth of the pistol on its own? Thanks.

the pictures are katywampus - and condition looks - okay - the bring back papers look like xerox copies?

value the same as above, but personally, I would pay less as I see one a bit more used than David does...

what are they asking - folks always want to know what its worth, if you already bought it, then either you got a decent deal or paid too much. ;)

Didn't buy yet. Asking 1900. Papers are not copies.

That is high for the condition. Looks like quite a bit of pitting. Holster worth $200-275. I would look for one in better shape..Did they say what the bore looks like? With the pitting the bore might well be rough. I agree on the papers nice maybe but not much value. Bill

Make sure that the number "42" or "43" is stamped inside the sideplate. The matching plate would have one of those numbers in there.

Looks like some pitting. What condition are gripstraps? Perhaps a $1400 gun plus holster. Tools were not aluminum and should be blued.

tannhauser88, just as a comparison, I purchased a 1939 Mauser in better condition, all matching except mag. There was no tool or papers, but the holster was in much better condition. I paid $1200 almost a year ago.

The more knowledgeable (than me) members that posted above opine that your subject luger is over priced. I agree. That Mauser is desirable (if the barrel bore is good) but over priced. You are getting wise and useful advice. Keep us posted regarding what happens.

Don't be in a rush; there are more lugers every where for sale.
Spend a little time and get a better one for the same money or equal one for less.

I know this is easy advice to give, had to do; I frequently do not follow it myself! ;)
