Just how many?
 

I have 20 versions of lugers and an old "Lugers At Random" Just how many different models are there! The contract lugers alone are awesome!! What is your favorite? That is a very hard decision! They are like my grandchildren. Each unique in their own way a I love them all!! Eric

Depends on how one defines "versions"? That would be the place to start.

Could be only two- Old models and New models.

Could also be over a million- if you count each serial number as a "version". ;)

When I see one I want, it is a different "version" by my own definition! :)

Perhaps by "variation" or "model" you can mean a "group of guns within which cannot be distingusihed from one anothr by an external visual inspection alone." E.G. Change in toggle = different model. (early versus late toggles) or "with stock lug, or without stock lug would mean a different model. Swiss Lugers with unrelieved or relieved magazine wells would be considered different models, since there is a modification- to be seen by the flat or round knob on the magazine.

While a complete product can be patented, there are many more patents on specific design details and features of Lugers.

Many of these products were the result of refinement over many decades. The "S" shaped flat spring gave way to the coil spring.

You can get some idea of patent activity by taking a look at the German patent office website:

Try searching Applicant/Owner.Inventor "Georg Luger" and look at the patents starting in "GB" or "US" to read English version documents. When you click on the "PDF" symbol, you'll see the first page of the patent. Click on "Load full document" in the upper right to get the entire patent, including the graphics.
