It would be more interesting if I could read german

Try this neat translation site Don...

Just insert the URL of the site you want to read in the appropriate place and then select the language translation you want to occur and when you press the translate button the miracle of technology will make the page readable for you.

It AIN'T perfect, but it sure does a better job than trying to look up individual words in a dictionary... I have had good success with it.

It even works with Japanese-to-English and back again!!!

Enjoy!

What language, pray, is Bavarian? When I lived there for nigh on seven years I was aware, as I was when I lived in Berlin and before that, in Rheindahlen, that there is a vernacular spoken in everyday speach which is not exactly what you would call text-book German, I have not come across the vernacular, called Bayrische, as a separate and distinct language.

My grandma always said that 'REAL' German was only spoken in the Baden-Baden region of Germany!

Then what is Yiddish?, but a German dialect?

Re: language is Bavarian..

There are dialects in German just as there are in the U.S. Listen to a man from W.Virgina, one from Maine, one from Mississippi and you'll quickly hear the difference. Bavaria has a State called Swaben, henceforth the name Schwabish (sp)or Schwob.

Re: language is Bavarian..

Schwob,

You are totally correct about the different dialects in the US and the same is on Germnay. Speaking of dialect, I saw a "Judge Judy" show on TV and there was a trial by two families from Alabama. The dialect spoken by them was difficult for me to follow and I am from South Carolina. I am sure anyone above the Mason Dixon Line would have a very hard time understanding the meaning of what they were saying. If I had not listened closely I would have been lost in the meaning of the sentence structure.
