Power Pistol Loads
 

I decided to try Alliant Power Pistol based on recommendations from this forum. However, the recommended load, 5.3 grains behind a 115 gr. bullet, sounds like a cap gun and doesn't even move the toggle. The reloading manuals I have start at 6.0 grains.

I am interested in successful Power Pistol loads for 9mm. I am using CCI primers and 115 gr. plated bullets, seating at 1.160.

Never tried Power Pistol, my mild load under a 115 grain plated bullet is 4.2 grains of AA#2, a warmer load is 4.7 grains of Titegroup. 5.3 grains of Unique also works well.

All run my Lugers fine and would be more economical than a heavier weight of another powder.

I have loaded a lot of 9mm brass with Power Pistol powder, and am very pleased with the accuracy. It does have a bit of flash/bang compared to other powders, especially if one shoots indoors. I have loaded 115gr FMJ bullets with loads of PP starting with 5.8-6.2 grains. I have not loaded above 6.2gr as I saw no need. 5.3gr of PP would be a very "soft" load and likely not cycle most autos. You might want to load a few rounds starting at 5.8grs and work your way up.

Are you sure the recomendation wasn't for 124 gr bullets?

I find 5.0 and 6.0gn work well for 124gn jacketed bullets. Based on that, a starting load of 6.0gn for 115gn sounds safe. My manuals show start loads for jacketed 115gn bullets and Power Pistol ranging from 4.8-6.2gn and MAX loads from 6.3-7.6gn. Bullseye shooters tend to use 6.0-6.2gn.
Starting loads are not selected so they will function a gun, and particularly not a toggle. They are selected to be a safe place to start, no matter what variations there are in components or gun.
You just have to work the load up like any other loading endeavor.
You could try a couple at 5.5gn and see how that feels and then maybe 5.8gn, 6.0gn, 6.2gn, etc.

Thanks. The load I looked at was indeed for the 124 gr. bullet. I will try some rounds at 5.8 gr. and see if they cycle.

Keep us informed. You might want to try 10-12 @ 5.8gr PP, and 10-12 @ 5.9-6.0 gr PP and see how the two different loads work out for you in YOUR Luger.
