Does anyone have an idea why this is modified this way?

Just curious...

Two wild guesses...

1. Full-auto mod :eek:

2. Improved sear linkage :rolleyes:

The flat spring that would bear on the trigger lever would suggest a mod to eliminate 'slack' in the trigger...

That it is on eBay suggests it's not too effective... :p

Rich is on the right track, lots of work to overcome a problem? Maybe failure to reset caused by putting too strong a spring in the sear bar plunger?

Well, I am stumped.:confused: But, then it could be the ol' "steam punk" mod. LOL

Perhaps it is more like a tool to check / adjust trigger levers?

My guess is with Rich... I think it was some kind of attempt at a full auto mod. The missing top half of the sideplate is quite perplexing...

Could it be a homemade attempt at a full auto side plate?

Or lighten trigger pull??? What is the trigger pull on a typical Luger??? :confused:

I'd pay $70 for a sideplate, but not this one... :rolleyes:

The ends of both "prongs" are shown to be drilled through in the additional photos in the ebay link. So there is another component, that hinged on an axle there, that is missing.

Dust cover??? :confused:

Exactly. I suspect that this is a gunsmithing experiment going horribly wrong, and it's probably just as functional as a muffler bearing.

It's obviously "very rare", and in this case I'd say we should be thankful for that. :eek:

If full auto, then it probably had a VERY STRONG trigger spring and tight tolerances to stop it once the trigger was released. Or a missing part? That would keep it running away and probably for use with a snail drum. BUT is it period or not, and has anyone seen or heard about such a weapon?

Yes, if you mean attempts at full auto luger pistols; no if you mean anything as crude as that particular side plate.

This type development or attempts are documented in Goertz and Surgess- and several German patents shown.

Period? No way to know.

You just got to give somebody credit for thinking up and trying something--whatever it is.

Well, if you look at it that way, you have to at least give the "inventor" an A for effort. I can almost guarantee that Georg Luger's workbench (and trash bin) was full of gizmos he tried while perfecting his masterpiece.

By the way... that spring looks familiar, I'm sure I have seen one of those somewhere else. Is it for an adjustable rear sight?

Could that be the top portion of a Colt type Single Action hammer spring?

If it is it has been modified beyhond recognition.
