What does he have, a re-work?
I am all ways on the hunt for my next P08, A guy at work show me one today that I am not sure of? It is unmarked, except for the Serial number (on frame under the barrel) SZ782X, and the word “Germany”. The number appears to match and may have been re-blued @ sometime in the past. What does he have a re-work with the marking ground off? I was thinking about picking it up for $300 bucks as a shooter-what do you guys think?

If it is safe to shoot, and will shoot, it is probably worth $300.
Can't tell much more about it without more info and pictures. |
ATF holds changing or defacing serial numbers a crime. I've never heard of a Luger with a serial number formatted that way.
Can't help much without a picture. Caveat Emptor. |
OK- as I remember ,the stamped serial # ,appeared to be factory made, But I will check it again on monday-
|
All German made lugers are either four digit, four digit with a letter (suffix) or can be up to six digits, no letters.
No exceptions on front of frame numbers known to me... |

Could you post some close up pictures of that gun? |

three-steps
Post some close up, detailed pictures of the pistol and describe it to us in detail. After that maybe we can give you an idea of originality and value. |
I called the guy today (about something else) and asked him to re check the serial #. He said that he sees a mark over a N and( four numbers) 782#,so I may be wrong about the serial # and will check it on Monday.

The Crown over N would indicate a commercial pistol.
|
A commercial shooter grade luger (which often will be found in 7.65mm Luger caliber) is worth more than $300 today...

I have a number of pistols that are so worn, rusted or pitted that the serial numbers can't be completely read. The old Spanish Ruby's are routinely this way. Yet many are sold and auctioned off. I've owned 22 rifles that never had serial numbers, they were just made and sold in the US prior to WWII. So no serial is not a game stopper, and at $300 any complete luger, not demilled, is worth the price.

Well- it was what it was , He sold it for 500 bucks- so I am back on the hunt.
