Noticed on GB a 1937 with straw parts. Ungodly pric since its supposedto be obe of 30.000 (guess). Can you tell if those pieces have been restored or even refinished to up the price. Seems like every luger ever made is in some "special" category of rare pieces, henceforth commanding higher prices. Weren't there over a million lugers made? They can't all be rare pieces.

Welcome to the world of slick marketing. That is why your education here, and your experience and book knowledge, will help protect you from "buying the story, and not buying the gun". Generally the rust blued 1937 do bring a bit more than the later, and more common, salt blued guns, but within reason. A few hundred dollars, yes, a few thousand, no.

Oh, yes, absolutely- all luger pistols are "special"; just depends on how deep you want to go into their production and history! ;) Only the ones left for sale are "rare".

1920 Commercial DWM pistols in 7,65mm are at the bottom of the heap- but they Can command a healthy premium for condition. The top is so high, I can't see it, but probably some GL marked prototype or presentation that really is rare(except for the fakes).

Geographic location also affects price. If there are none being traded in a particular area, the price will be high. No seller will say "It's just a run-of-the-mill Luger that I jacked the price up on because nobody else is selling one" so they say it's 'rare'. And in my area, it is. And at shows/shops, it's hundreds of dollars more. And it's only there for a day or two. :(

I agree with Don and Richard! In 1969 Charles Kenyan published 'Lugers At Random' which contained over 400 pages of the different varieties of lugers and that was written over over 40 years ago. Lugers are in some cases unique as the persons that collect them. I own twenty and each has its own features, value, conditions and personality! Thanks for your inquiry.
