Choice between two lugers
 

These are a bit on the high side for shooters, but what would be your choice

A matching 1937 s/42 ex vopo with the seal stamped out or a reblued byf 41, that now has a plumb receiver? Both have good bores.

Wouldn't you rather have the Nambu??? Be one of the 'Scourge of the Pacific'! :D

VoPo's usually have new barrels, and are built with 'good' parts. The price is not too fantastic.

I would agree with Richard, although I don't use any Luger at the range, I think I would prefer the Vopo's, and I would add they are not on the cheap side either.

They actually have a 1929 nambu for $895.00. I'm just not into Japanese firearms.

I would pass on both.
Save a little more money and buy a 95% original Luger (all matching except mag).

Either one will be a good shooter choice. You pick the one you fancy most.

Yes, we can see it hanging on the wall behind the $1019 Luger. That is too much for a Nambu, unless it has the clamshell holster, extra magazine, and cleaning rod. And is a Winter trigger guard Type 14 in excellent condition. Otherwise, $600-$650. :thumbup:

I wasn't into Japanese handguns either, but a member here bought one & showed it off, and I started doodling with PhotoShop and came up with an 'artillery' Nambu, and that kick started me into doing three more long-barreled handguns with tangent sights.

But I digress... :p

The VoPo has a history that no other variation of Luger does - It's life didn't stop in 1945. The East German police [VolksPolizei] either used this Luger or stockpiled it for emergency use. Perhaps some day soon we will learn the armories that built these from parts, what units were issued them, or where they were stored. That's history, and VoPo's are a part of it. :thumbup:

I'd go for the Vopo, but try to bargain to under $1000.

Dream on, the days of $600 Nambu pistols in matching shape is long gone.
Magazines are getting into "luger" territory price wise, minimum $125; a rig as you describe will run close to a grand if in any shape at all.

I carve my dreams in cold steel, friend. ;) I forget what Zorba paid, but I think $600 is what I paid...When was that, two years ago??? :confused: I'd have to dig out my receipt...I paid $650 and got the second magazine. Only one mag matched; the other was a different serial but fit better/looked better. And the Nambu had a chipped extractor. :rolleyes:

I paid somewhere around $600-$650 for my Nambu. Was able to find the matching mag on eBay for $180. Sweet shooting gun.

But IN GENERAL, I've found prices quoted on this forum to be "optimistic" to say the least, real world prices seem to be a bit higher!

If they are both all matching, go for the one that has the best / sharpest appearance. The S/42 has a cracked left grip.

They are at best $700-$850 guns since the VoPo could have been acquired a year or two ago for $600.

I'd rather have a Mauser made shooter properly fit mismatched gun that hasn't been reblued and heavily buffed.

The 41 byf has that overbuffed look which I don't like at all. The plum color would not be as much of an issue. If it doesn't come with a correct period magazine (a FXO) I wouldn't bother with it at that price.

For the extra $25 you get a magazine with the top one

For a shooter, you will need to buy an aftermarket magazine (think Mec-Gar) regardless of which Luger you choose.
