I joined this forum to see if I can verify when my lugers where made. I'll limit myself to one of them for this inquiry.

I just pruchased this one the other day. I couldn't pass it up.
Mine appears to be one of the 'Oberndorf' commercial Lugers with the V suffix. I assume it was manufactured around 1929. 749V. It is listed in your 5th generation database. I attached some pics. It has the Police sear safe.

Can you tell me what the police marking on the grip stands for?

Ldj. M. Str.1171.

I'm not an expert on these markings, but this might help:

http://oldmilitarymarkings.com/police_unit_marks.html

Ldj: Landjaegerei / Gendarmerie: rural police. By 1932 it consisted of 16,532 men, of which 8,929 were Prussian.

I have not seen a marking spelled out like this, nor so stretched out

The grip strap marking is that of the Landjägerei (rural constabulary) of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. This same pistol is discussed on p. 244 of HWIS. To my knowledge, this is the only example of this marking extant. I believe the original marking was Ldj.M.Str.29. and it was renumbered to 1171 following the 1934 merger of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Mecklenburg-Schwerin to form Mecklenburg (HWIS p.239).
