Newbie question on Luger parts

I recently aquired a 42 byf, but after inspection noticed that the toggle pin also called axle pin has a different number than the rest of the gun .can anyone tell me if that's a replacement piece then.or did they stamp that different....

It's a replacement. It should have the last 2 digits of the serial number.

Luckily but in your case unfortunately all Lugers have most of their parts numbered, and they must be matching to have an "all matching" gun.
Have a look in the FAQ of this site you'll find a lot of useful info.
Welcome to this Luger site!

Welcome for sure.

I would not call the piece a "replacement" meaning done in service, it would likely have been numbered correctly.
It is probably just a mix up which could have happened anytime, and as Sergio says, resulted in a "mis-matched" piece.

You didn't say what number it was; if you are looking for a matching number, put a Wanted To Buy thread in the, um, "Wanted To Buy" sub-forum.

Include the number wanted and the number of your old pin, if you want to sell or swap it. :)

Blank pins are also available. Lugerdoc may have one.

Correct me if I am wrong, weren't some years or models issued with un-numbered toggle pins? Of course none were issued with incorrect numbers.

I think the lugers made before 1932, i.e. before Mauser, had no numbers. Many were later given numbers when they went in for repair or re-work.

You are correct , they would not have been issued with the wrong number!

Sometimes you see replacement pins that are marked with the oversize in mm.

Here is one:

So there are oversize toggle/axle pins...Hmph...I have an unmarked pin that is .002" oversize...It won't fit anything I have... :soapbox:

0.05mm = .002"...Yeah, that's it...

Rich, poke around and I think you'll find a post by Ed about toggle pins--he has/had some of the oversize ones he bought a long time ago, and ever found a use for one once, IIRC.

Thanks guys you all have a lot of experience in this field.i guess I'll brush it off as a lesson learned. I'm happy with it its a brown widow variety. I look forward to posting more. And buying another Luger this year. I just bought a real nice Walter ppk early inter arms import with box and papers

So you think Ed would want to buy it? What's it worth, you think? [wisecrack deleted]
